Displaying a flashing icon above map events/characters

Ok, this is something I would like to do through RGSS. I would like to display a small animated icon in the upper right corner of the character sprites on the game map. These icons would be relatively simple, like an circle that flashes between black and yellow. I would like to have these icons attached to specific game events, and I would like the animation and the icon to last indefinitely until instructed to stop by an RGSS script.

This will probably require modification of the Game_Character and Spriteset_Map classes. If I knew where to start, this probably wouldn't be too difficult to code. As it is, I am not certain where to start. I am hoping someone in the community has already coded something like this, and can give me some pointers.
