hey guy (and gals),
I have a dilema. I recently bought Kingdom hearts 2 (the original one) and i bought ffx awaile ago cause my best friend didnt have any games for his ps2 the he bought.now i need either to buy a ps2 or a ps3 for myself. BEFORE you tell me OH BUY TEH PS3 CAUSE ITS NEW HAXOORRR or stuff like that i need a complete justified answer (the whys)

anyhow thank you in advance

Well, nowadays you can find a PS2 for only $100. But the PS3 is new and still going on $500-$600.

There are only about 200 games for the PS3 so far, but there are over 10,000 games for the PS2. The PS3 can play PS2 games, but so can the PS2, of course. There are well over 25,000 games for the PS1, all of which the PS2 can play. But the PS3 can't play most PS1 games, which is why they're re-making them for the PS3.

So, you have two options:

A. Buy a PS2. You can play any PS1 or PS2 games, but will not be able to play the next-gen games like Kingdom Hearts 3.

B. Buy a PS3. This will knock about 70% of the Playstation games off of your playability list, but at least you'll have the latest games.

Personally, I already have a PS2, and am saving up for a PS3. But I'll still keep my PS2 so I can play my PS1 games.

...

Don't listen to him, please.

There are like 30 games for the PS3, not two hundred.

There MIGHT be 400 PS2 games.

And the PS3 plays PS1 games just fine, from what I've seen.

Seph... your numbers just came flying out of you ass, didn't they?

I say go on ebay and get a PS2 on the cheap, and probably get some games out of it, too. Unless, of course, there's something you are really itching to play on PS3.

Good games will take a while to come up on PS3, and anyway, you'll be always be able to play them some months later.
For now buying probably a ps2 is better since it's cheaper. Of course if you have the amount of money required for the ps3, I would suggest you to go for it, after all it would be a good investment. In the other hand, if you don't have that much money, go for a ps2, anyway you'll find many of the old ps2 games really cheap in stores or e-bay.

There ARE that many games. You can find a list of all the games for the PS2 on the internet. And there aren't 200 PS3 games out yet, but they're on the "To be released" lists.

Everyone thinks they're right just because they don't know what someone's talking about...

If you buy a cheap PS2, then wait for the inevitable price drop on the PS3, you'll end up paying the same amount as just buying a PS3 now. Except you'll get to skip the bugs they're still working out and observe what games come out for it before you make a final decision.

Excellent suggestion, Ccoa.

I remember when the PS2 first came out, almost the entire first wave of them to go out (which I received one such console) ended up having a flaw with the reading laser. After about 2 years, it stopped reading blue bottom discs, then black bottom and finally almost stopped reading discs altogether. I had to buy a replacement a few years ago, but had I waited for them to catch the bug, I wouldn't have gotten one with a defective laser.

Plus, if you are just going to use it to play PS2 and PS1 games for right now, then getting a cheap PS2 would probably be your best bet. Wait for the price drop and release of some major titles on the PS3 and then snag one.

Like Ccoa said, you'll probably end up paying a little less than you would for a PS3 right now, in the long run.

the only ps3 games that i would buy really is kh3 and ffxiii other than that the current titles of the ps3 dont attract me much

and my current games to be both on ps2 : kh1, katamari 1 & 2, okami, onimusha 3, devil may cry (and i have a pretty long list)

i was amazed that at ebgames they have ton of ps2 games.

By all accounts, if you count every game ever announced (that is, if you count released and unreleased games) from every region (US, EU, JP, so on), there are fewer than 1,500 PS2 games. This was determined using, you guessed it, lists from the internet.

1,500 is less than 10,000.

Also, when you said there are 200 games for the PS3 so far, saying "so far" can easily imply they are already out. For example, FFXIII isn't out so far.

@kip
Hehe, I buy used PS2 games from gamestop/EB games in batches of 20 from time to time. Lots to choose from.

I'm 100% certain 10,000 games haven't been released let alone published or green lit in the past 10 years on all the currently available consoles + the pc.

Did you die for a while and come back to life?

Also yes there aren't 10,000 PS2 games, unless maybe you decided to count... Oh, every PS2 game, every possible translation, every PS1 game (of course with translations), then added a large number for no reason.

I'd say just go for a damn PS2. There's a lot of good games for the thing (2,000 out of those 10,000 are gr8), and it's pretty cheap at the moment.
