desperate housewives is great television dude. people who say otherwise are probably thinking of the bullshit REALITY HOUSEWIVES series that spawned from this show's popularity, but this series has great writing, excellent characters and serious charm that makes for great entertainment.
i've seen seasons 1-6 and while it loses some of its magic as it goes on (as does every show without a clear endgame in mind), i can't complain because it's a consistently good watch.
seeing "a few episodes" or even catching one episode and dismissing it is a huge disservice to the show. yes, desperate housewives is full of horrible suburban cliches and lame mysteries but that's just the hook: the core of the show is in the DEVELOPMENT OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS, and it's seriously rewarding if you stick with it.
the shows that i like the most are the ones that are all about character development (six feet under, the sopranos, breaking bad): and Desperate Housewives falls into that category (though not as good as those other shows on a technical level but what do you expect from pop primetime). the premise isn't very attractive at first, but after you get to know these characters, when you begin to realize WHO THEY ARE and WHY THEY ARE and empathize with them, the show has a really unique kind of magic.
my favorite character—by far—is Tom Scavo. his storylines become progressively more important in each season, and are all INCREDIBLY REAL. he has so much emotion and depth and he gives tremendous power to a kind of "everyman" character. also Orson Hodge becomes a great character. there's a lot of RAW EMOTIONAL DEPTH to this show.
but that isn't to say that the other characters are any less interesting. with the exception of Susan in the later seasons, every character has a great storyline that really puts them in developmental situations, and that's what good television is about. as you know these characters and GROW WITH THEM over years, it's hard not to love desperate housewives. when a character makes a cameo appearance or someone makes a continuity nod to something that YOU REMEMBER HAPPENING EIGHT YEARS AGO, it feels pretty cool. and seeing the kids grow up and stuff, it's a cool feeling. it's one of the reasons i really love these kinds of long-running shows in the first place: you get to experience so many lives from so many different perspectives.
wyatt don't let these haters deter you. this is a genuinely good tv series and i'd suggest to anyone to give it a real watch from the beginning.
