wow: cataclysm is $30 and base-game wow is about $15 so actually if that were the grand prize and you didn't have the base game we'd probably foot the bill for the base game, too.

but if you HAVE the base game, then that saved money's an indie game you or someone else could get!

huh
on black friday saw a whole row of them for 5 bucks at best buy.
besides, it's just world of warcraft.

and i would so change my game votes for minecraft.

Oops, the poll closed itself!!

Reopened it.

Right now we have a 4-way tie for Theme ... Break that shit!

It's down to ...

Nuclear winter [Theme] [ 4 ]
Folklore [Theme] [ 4 ]
Supernatural (Lovecraftian) Horror [Theme] [ 4 ]
HBGames member(s) in Webcomic of your choice[Theme] [ 4 ]

Tie breakin votes needed!! :box:
Will close the vote sometime around 9pm EST!

I'm with Plague on this one. Nuclear Winter brings up a lot of cool ideas in my mind, that I would never usually contemplate. I would love to see what people can produce with that theme.

(p.s. we can probably just make all 4 tied themes available and have them choose; i'm just attempting to drum up support a little)

Just as a general hint on the subject... a contest design thing is pretty good, however when I first read this, I was thinking that more than a random theme would have to be submitted... I mean, a theme is a theme, not an 'idea' really... and definately not a contest design.
Good contests consist of a task at hand, not a theme - "design a nuclear winter game" is much much different from "create a game that revolves around special system designed to help survival in nuclear winter", which could lead to something as the radiation-level-displaying Pip-Boy from Fallout 3 (taking an existant example in case the nuclear winter theme wins... don't want to spoil any contestivity). This way, there'd be an objective to reach, and results would be more interestingly compareable; and you could say "okay, a radiation display is cool for survival, but there could be something more actively helpful".

However I'm not trying to get anyone down or say the contest won't be a cool thing... just saying what I'd like to see in the next installation of this (if it turns out any successful) for feedback reasons. In that sense: Have fun!

Except with this approach, it allows people a lot more creative freedom, which is what the site is all about. Could be a game, a painting, a piece of music... anything. And we're free to convey the theme in a variety of different ways. It's more fun to work with, and a lot more enjoyable to see what everyone comes up with.

I haven't said what it's going to be yet; you are making assumptions ~

Also, like Silver said, if you make the theme/goal too narrow, it hinders creativity.

Like when you think "folklore", the interpretation can be rather loose, and you drum up all kinds of ideas. You could make a game about an ancient African tale on the Sahara. Or you could write a song about Davey Jones' Locker. Or you could make a sweet flash video about Babe the Blue Ox ... Lots of options.

If I said you have to "make an action platformer set in medieval Europe involving dragon-slaying" ... Well, that's rather limiting!
And some people aren't too interested in dragons, so we'd lose participation based on lack of enthusiasm. You can only really narrow your expectations when you have the sheer volume of participants to be picky.

The theme is more about a loose assurance that you're starting from scratch, so the playing field is more level. There will be one other stipulation I haven't mentioned yet ;o

Well anyway, I've extended the voting deadline by 1 more day.
Mostly because I've been slammed with work and have to go on a dinner cruise tonight.

So you have until sometime tonight EST to vote!

We still have a 2-way tie, people!

I like to watch and play games online in my free time. sometimes i like to play games online because of its colorful creation and good actions of characters. when i read your read your website i am so wondering because of your voting system for 3 best games. but here it is very difficult to choose the best game because all have extra ordinary background, colors and features. really it is pretty sweet and cool.
