Contributed. Your dog is adorable, and it was very noble of you to adopt a troubled dog. You have to know, though, that malamute-mixes--especially ones with anxiety issues--require ridiculous amounts of attention. When all of this is over, you should really consider signing him up in some sort of planned activity, where he is forced to interact with other dogs, whether at a dog park, or at some dog-related event.

Malamutes, huskies, and any wolf hybrids are more social than most dogs. They require someone, or something, to be around them at all times. If there are long stretches of time when he won't have anyone around, you HAVE to find alternate care for him. Think of him like a toddler. He needs daycare. There are dog walkers who work for like $20/week, which is cheaper than any daycare you'd find if you had a kid.

At the very least, if you do find that you need to part with him for one reason or another, PLEASE don't send him back into the Humane Society system. There are no-kill shelter organizations, dog rehab clinics, and all sorts of other alternatives, if you only take the time to do the research. They would jump at being able to care for such a beautiful and useful dog.

Ven,

I thank you so much for your generous contribution! You will be happy to know the following:

  • We go on walks every morning, and evening
  • We run every morning and night
  • I take him to Falls Park/Cleveland Park (HUGE, 5 miles of walking)
  • PLENTY of people love him and like him when I take him downtown Greenville, SC.
  • He gets along with dogs at the dog park already
  • He has a wolf-mix friend that he plays with (my friend's dog)
  • I am an active person and plan on taking him backpacking/hiking with me (he can carry water for us)
  • His anxiety is already almost gone after the 5 days
  • I love him.

He is in excellent hands with me! I know I work all day (I take my lunch break to go walk him and play), but I dedicate a lot of time to him and do not mind as I have been on my own for a little bit now and nothing was going to change for me, so I had to take the step in doing so. I am blessed with him, and I want to take care of him to the best of my abilities.

Thank you again!

I'm glad to hear it. I read through your descrip, and it really sounds like you're focusing on keeping him active, sociable, and obedient. Keep it up.
I've always loved wolf-blends too, but I know that I will never be quite social enough for one. A lot of people forget that you always have to adopt dogs that fit your personality.

#1 with training dogs: ALWAYS react to EVERYTHING the same way. If he does good behavior, or bad behavior, you must ALWAYS react in the exact same manner. Doesn't mean he needs a treat every time, but I mean that you should always say the same commands or reactive speech (like "Good" or "Bad dog") or emotions (they can certainly pick up on how you're feeling). And since he's already an adult, you will have to keep up the training routine for a very long time. Probably several years or more. Otherwise, he'll just relapse into undesirable habits.

Anyway, good luck hon. I always have a soft spot for anything related to dogs :) <3

I am glad I picked to post about it here then. I feel like I trust you guys here anyways. :) I have been working really hard on getting him to be a good dog so that when I take him back to adopt him, they will see a whole different dog. Thank you for your training tip, Ven!

I will do my best in keeping him until his last day. He will make a great companion in the following years; he also makes for a great wingdog for a single guy like myself. ;) Please pass my link onto others so I may continue in this! Our money will not affect us when we are dead, let's make the best of its use while it has worth.

Haha, thanks again. <3

YAY! :P Thank you moog. I actually grew up in Colorado, but my family moved out here last year, and now I am in my own place in Greenville. :) About 5 minutes outside of downtown.
