Dealing with the GIMP?

I recently installed the newest version of GIMP, and found it to be more difficult to use than the older version was. I unfortunately cannot find out how to do two of the things I used most of all before. I'm using GIMP 2, but I don't know what I was using before. It may be possible I am using the older version now and used to have the newer one, but I find this unlikely.

I lost the last GIMP I was using when my computer received a virus and I had to reformat.

Anyway, it all boils down to this. How do move a selection after I have selected it (I, for some reason, and unable to click and drag), and when using the ball that fades out in thickness (the middle is not see through yet the outside pixels gradually become more and more transparent), I find that the circle does not fade at all even though I have selected the fading circle option.

I am probably just doing some kind of silly mistake, but could somebody help me here?

Ha! Same problem as me!  I also had the misfortune of installing the latest 2.4 version, and have similar feelings for it.  :dead: Mainly in the ways its now "copying Photoshop" ...badly.

Anyway, I currently have it uninstalled until I can find an old version download, but I believe I can answer your question:

First, select an area with the Selection Tool: the one that looks like this: http://www.bmb.leeds.ac.uk/illingworth/ ... select.gif[/img]

then, to move it, you have to copy it (CTRL + C), then create a new layer (the button that kind of looks like this: http://www.tablane.com/images/tclipper_ ... age007.jpg[/img] near the bottom.

Then Select None, (SHIFT + CTRL + A), and Paste your image (CTRL + V). Finally, choose the Select and move tool which looks a lot like this: http://www.cottagearts.net/tut_images/t ... pse_14.jpg[/img] to finally move your image around.

That's the best I can describe it. I don't think there is an easy way to do it, in Photoshop, you can open the select box, and use CTRL + CLICK + DRAG to move it around so maybe a similar shortcut would work?

Hope this helps :)

*opens GIMP*
Hmm, weird. I used to use GIMP when I was on Linux, and I see some new tools. Anyways, yeah I'd go with cut paste move; I don't remember what I did when I used it :/ I don't think I had that problem; and I believe I was using GIMP 2.4. Or was it 2.2? Anyways.
What do you mean by the second problem? Fade? You mean a gradient?
