Cucumberness

Heyhey!

Apparently all my images in this topic disappeared because the host changed names, but they're back.
Anyway, these are some of the characters I've sprited on the Cucumber Template by Greenraven.

Don't bother to read the topics,  every "update" I made won't figure a picture anymore, so everything finished is in this post.

So what do you think? Comments, critiques, something wrong with my shading - hell, I know nothing about anything, so just fire at me with anything you've got, I can only learn. And I need lots and lots of C&C.

Pretty good!
I like it alot, but the only thing that kinda stumps me is the horizontal lines in the middle, it just seems a little weird and big, but thats probably my own eyes or something
other than that looks good! I'd probably change the feet though.

Yeah, I wasn't really sure what to do with the horizontal lines in the middle, but if I want to extend them onto the vest itself that's the minimal size I can do it, 'cause it only one pixel, unless, like with the female grappler, I close the vest and make the horizontal piece 3 pixels long instead of the (I admit, pretty long) 5 pixels.
What's wrong with the feet though? I wasn't sure how to start on those, so I kind of copied them from a character in the cucumber batch, heh.

Really? 'Cause I downloaded that batch and I'm pretty sure the Grappler01 isn't in there. The female grappler (or 'brawler' as it's called there) is in there, but this one isn't there. That's why I'm doing him.

I do agree on the RTP remaking thing. Yet I just figured that, to practice my spriting skills and for a first sprite, an already existing, fairly easy, character would be a good choice. The RTP chars are alright for that, especially this one, but yeah, one day I will try and make my own characters, one day.

EDITED: I'm going crazy. Something must be wrong. Good lord, I'm asking for help on importing my OWN sprites. Upon importing them into the database, I select the transparency colour and the semi-transparent colour and... there's still the coloured border around it. Could anyone please check this and see if I'm doing something wrong or if something's wrong in general?
DOUBLE EDIT: I've finished it up until line 3, though I just realised I might need to adjust the shading on it.

Well, what I meant about the feet is that your not really changing anything about it. as you see on the templates you haven't created yet and the ones you have sprited, they look the same :P
nice edit by the way.

It's dundundundundone! I've gone ahead and edited the first post, so there it it. I've fixed the issue I had with importing, seems there were some actual transparent pixels somewhere instead of green ones on the template, so yeah.

Rejoices!

I've started a sprite based on a drawing of a teacher I had a couple of years ago. Me and a friend of mine made some animated cartoons about him and my english teacher.

I still have no idea what's with shading though. But I guess this kind of fits the image I'd use for his battler if I'd actually make a game; which is my intention someday.

This is a revamped (actually completely redone 2.0 version) of the original image... the horror.

DONTCHOO BE CRITICIZIN MA DRAWING STYLEZ!! I'LL KILL YA! I'LL KILL ALLL OF YA!!! But yeah, it's not perfect, but it'll do for me. I know I'm not the greatest artist in the world, but oh well. And I can't draw hands, at least I can't in the program I used for it... Mmh.

Here's a group picture of the other teachers that will have to be transformed into sprites if I want to make the game eventually. This screen is from a scene that was supposed to be in a movie based on them... oh lord, I'm too ambitious.
From left to right; Mr. Rosseau, geography teacher, Mr. Perdu, maths teacher, Mr. Dirks, English teacher (he's not very big, so we exaggerated that and made him a dwarf), and mws. Kempinaire, she taught us ethics. Or something like that. Oh yeah, and she's addicted to coca cola.

And also, here's the progress on Mr. Janssens.

Egh, now I have to start on the side-view... I have no idea how to do the hair on the side, though. Any ideas, anyone?

Personally I really love your drawing style! Like the same way i love watching southpark even though it's art isn't fantatic.

I love seeing people are using my templates ^^.
The sprite looks quite good but then again, it's an easy template to work with.
But imho you should really work on the hair, maybe read some hair spriting tutorials.

nevertheless, keep up the great work.

Don't forget, skin gets shaded around the hairline and under clothes' folds and seams! The hair doesn't look immediately wrong to me, other than that it needs some highlights.

Now that I'm seeing more of the drawings, they're growing on me, they kinda remind me of one of those Nickelodeon cartoons from the early 90's :'P

Alright, let's show this agains.

Yeah, you're right about everything you said about shading and stuff. But practice makes perfect, I guess, something with trial and error or something. I don't really like the hair, but it is probably not too horrible. I still have no clue what to do with the sideview hair; that'd basically complete it, so yeeah, it should at least look good/decent. But every single attempt looked nothing like anything, so that's not working out as well as it could.

I just had to finish them, I can't stand stopping something halfway when it's perfectly possible to complete it. So yeah, here's a Mr. Janssens and Mr. Dirks, Dutch and English teacher. Yay, the joy. I'll probably touch them up, someday, I'm glad with them - for now.

I still think the sideview hair isn't really right, but I wouldn't know how to do it better.
I also realised that now that I've started this game/project/whatchamacallit in this style, I'm going to have to make a whole lot of custom characters to go with it. And with some of the fun ideas I have in my head, it could mean A LOT of them... kind of. (including also different suits and costumes and shizzle for the main characters... oh boy oh boy.)

Say hello to Mr. Guy Rosseau!

Any comments/critics on this so far?

I've also started on animated battlers. They still need to be finetuned and somehow manipulated to work with the system & program perfectly (e.g. lining them up correctly and adding proper weapon animations.)

But here's an example (without skill animation, 'cause I haven't really worked out a way to replace that (teachers usually aren't that magical))

Hey, that's pretty cute!

The ginormous battler idea is new. Seems like it'd be pretty neat looking to have such large battlers, but the animation may look pretty choppy. (It looks less choppy in small sprites because every motion only requires a small amount of movement to look fluid; more has to change in large sprites to resemble realistic movement).
