Crying.

Do you think crying is a sign of weakness, or a way of showing true emotion?

To those who think it is a sign of weakness, why, exactly? Everybody should be able to cry so that they can get all those sad and upset feelings out of them.

What's your opinion?

I think it all depends. Just like any other situation, there are times when I suppose it could appropriate or not. Personally it takes A LOT (like a death of a close loved one.. and even then that's still a maybe) to get me to cry. I don't necessarily think it's really a weakness, in some aspects I suppose it could even be a strength.

Anyways, depends on the views of the person.

I reckon NOT crying is a sign of weakness for many people. To me, people who fight to hold back tears are usually afraid of what others might think of them.

The only time I think crying is "bad" is when it's faked in order to obtain attention. Crying is an expression of grief that should not be treated in so selfish a manner.

I cry whenever I get too stressed or when something bad, (and really bad) has happened. I don't think it is a sign of weakness, it's just a reaction people have to stress or something very bad happening.

I do not believe that crying is a sign of weakness as the reasoning for it can come in many forms, not just the negative. For instance, a mother and daughter have been reunited after twenty-thirty years of seperation. Unless they were forced to reunite with each other and cannot stand the sight of one another, I would assume that crying is appropriate considering it is a "joyous" occasion.

Another example would be; you stub your toe on the edge of the bed (not saying everyone cries when this happens). Sometimes the pain can trigger the need to cry, as crying is one of the brain's ways to cope with pain (both mentally and physically).

I don't think there's anything wrong with crying. It releases anger/stress and who wants to keep that bottled up?

I have to agree with Odio though, it should never be used that way.

It depends on the context. If you are crying because you dropped a peanut M&M on the ground, that is weak. If you're crying 'cause you had a rotten day and nothing is going right or whatever, it's a good thing. It makes you feel all refreshed. ^^

I almost never cry (well, present situation notwithstanding, because I am oceans away from the person who matters most to me, and this situation is likely to persist). I don't see it as a sign of weakness, I am just a very happy person. Even when I do cry, e.g. about Jen, it only usually lasts for a few tears.

I think for some people, crying is unhealthy. Some people lose themselves in it, and don't heal. However, for the most part, everyone needs a good cry once in a while.

Barring temper tantrums, I think crying is okay for the reasons that people have mentioned. But no one has mentioned crying not because of stress. Like at movies. I mean it's not stressful, but sometimes you get so struck by a scene, or a song or a word that you feel like crying.

I'm a little concerned for myself. I didn't use to do this, but I've turned into a chronic crier at movies. If you have any sort of sympathetic scene, crank up the sweeping strings and I'll be either teary eyed or crying (silently). I've actually started sobbing loudly after a movie but that was only once and luckily for my dignity, that was a movie I watched at home.

The weirdest thing that's made me cry was an episode of DBZ (and I think all always remember this). When Goten finally meets his father and you have his hesitation because you know, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME HE MEETS HIS (DEAD) FATHER in his life and I'm sure his mind has gone for a loop, then something clicks and he leaps into his fathers arms...I was totally gone (I was watching this with my sister who also got choked up and teary eyed so I think that it was just imo a powerful scene).

It's weird because a few years ago, I could watch Beaches and just watch it. Now I watch it and I'm crying when CeCe Bloom sings "The Glory of Love" (What a beautiful song btw.)

Maybe I'm just overly emotional with these things. I don't know.

It happens. I know a few people who got that problem for no reason at all, both guys & girls.

Blame it on eye strain and not blinking enough while watching. :)

Most girls nowadays cry all the time, for whatever reason... I can't stand this shit, as it's totally overturned...
On the other hand, there's crying when there needs to be crying... well, can't say anything against that, I suppose... I certainly don't think it's weak, but being someone who hardly ever cries (I can't even remember the last time I cried...), I also need to counter what Ambience said... if you're showing mental strength in a challenging situation, you're giving a certain feeling to people aside you... can't quite describe it, sorry...

Oh, like some sort of metaphorical rock to lean on? Yeah I can understand that. Hence why I said many as opposed to all.

O Fuck...

I'm quick to cry of happiness, but I can't seem to do so even if I'd want to on other "occasions". That's probably a worse thing than people seeing you cry (which is appaerently considered a bad thing, lie about it all you want make a "good impression", I bet the bigger part of people should be more honest with themselves here).

It really depends on the person, it's overally accepted that women cry, but when a guy does that he's instantly seen as emo or weak. A sign of weakness then? I don't know, someone is only weak if the others are strong.

Well, crying out of sadness can be seen as 'realizing something is too heavy for one to take', which'd make a link to weakness... also, there's the link to men being warriors in the past, needed to be strong, never show any weaknesses and such, which might also been taken over into today's morality...

Personally, I consider myself as a very balanced person, which is why I hardly ever have such strong emotion swappings that I'm crying out of happiness or sadness, or whatever... being a martial artist, I consider being balanced as strong, which'd mean that crying - associated with not being balanced - would be weak... well, either way, I don't think someone else is weak if he or she cries...

Speaking of upbringing, I myself have also been conditioned to avoid showing any hint of emotion. Shitty lows or extreme highs, you rarely would see me express such things visually. My old man is the type of guy who keeps a lot to himself, and this kind of thing has rubbed itself onto me. Thankfully though, I have my writing to provide me with an outlet. While I do cry sometimes, it’s usually where no one can see. It’s been years since I openly cried in front of another person (in fact, I can’t even remember when).

People always talk about the long fights in DBZ, but they forget that there were a handful of powerful moments like that. And Faulconer's score for that scene (in the dub, anyway) was simply beautiful. I actually bought one of his soundtrack CDs so I could own that track.

A question I have for people is do they ever allow themselves to cry in public? Personally, when I cry it's almost always in private. My girlfriend is probably the only one who has seen me crying in the past several years.
