HBGames Holiday Contest 2010

Week 2: Technical Development

banner_intro.png

Main contest thread is here.

Arguably one of the most important aspects of game-making is the barebones itself: the code. However, this also is expanded into numerous sections such as advertisement and marketing. Not only does this affect how the game plays, but how the game sells as well.

What are the challenges this week?
Participate in challenges pertaining to technical development and marketing which coincide with one of the three themes!

I can't do the above?
There are other ways to gain points like participation points (critiquing others' work). But give it your best anyway-- you can't improve unless you try, and some points are better than none!

This week's challenges are:

  • Script/coded sequence/system involving the theme in some fashion (explain how it does). Fully tested. Must supply .exe or .html to run (code language does not matter, so long as it will run in an .exe or .html). Quality of graphics get no bonus points. Interactivity scores better than non-interactive systems. Score based on impressiveness, utility, uniqueness, adherence to theme, and interactivity.
    Possible Points: 35

  • Website involving theme. Can use any web-capable code language, but code must be custom (no pre-built stuff, templates, blogs, or wikis). Must work with IE6+ & Firefox 2+, atleast resolution 1024x768. Score based on creativity, design, ease-of-access, adherence to theme, level of skill required to build.
    Possible Points: 30

  • Event System or Minigame involving theme. Fully tested. Must supply .exe to run (can be compiled in any game-making software, so long as it runs in an .exe). Nothing Flash-driven. Quality of graphics are appreciated but won't affect score that much. Score based on impressiveness, utility, uniqueness, adherence to theme, and interactivity.
    Possible Points: 25

  • Marketing advertisement for something pertaining to the theme. Can be anything from a fictional "movie" poster about it, or an ad or sign for a thematic product, or a flyer for a thematic party, or a banner for a fictional thematic website, etc. Can be animated or non-animated. Can be supplied in .html or any image format. Quality/originality of graphics help, but the design and marketing strategy are most important. All images used can be non-original, but credit artist(s). With your entry, write a blurb about who you'd be targeting, and why you think your advertisement would be effective to them. Score based on impressiveness, design mastery/skill, font use, effectiveness, uniqueness, and adherence to theme.
    Possible Points: 20

Again, every submission must relate to at least one of the three themes.

You are expected to submit quality work. We may or may not accept submissions depending on what you turn in. Forum rules apply to contest. Best submission of this week earns 10 bonus points. Second place earns 5. Remember to critique.

What are bonus points?
Bonus points are points awarded for certain accomplishments. These include: best submission of the week (staff pick), and best submission overall.

What are participation points?
Participation points are an alternative solution to the participating in the contest. Instead of having a contest board with all the submissions posted together, you instead post in the corresponding board: art goes in art board, music goes in music board, etc. When posted, members are allowed to critique your work which allows them to earn participation points if their critique is well thought out.

What defines a good critique?
A good critique is a critique that is around a few good sentences that not only go in depth in explaining what, but also bring up new, solid points as well. This includes leetspeak and spelling. Make sure to sound educated when giving a critique.

Can I submit as many submissions as I want?
Yes. And you may also submit for the same challenge as well.

Please submit works in the corresponding boards: art with visual art board, pixel art in pixel art board, etc. Make sure to post links of the submissions here in this thread. Use Sub topic icon when submitting. Failure to abide may result in submission being void. Once submitted you may not change the submission. Do not make separate threads for WIPS and submissions.

banner_questions.png

My question was not answered what do I do?
Post in this thread and ask.

Are there any other alternatives?
You can PM Venetia or bacon and we will answer it as soon as possible.

When does it end?
Sunday, January 9th. Days were added in consideration for New-years Eve and New-years Day.

It says I can't change submissions once I upload it. So I can't continue to work on it until the deadline? It has to be 100% done when I make a thread?

Nah, feel free to make a thread if you wish; you're welcome to show WIPs and work off of early critiques. It will only be submitted for grading after you post a link in this thread.

My mini-game entry: viewtopic.php?f=78&t=73330

Why would you skip week 3? This weeks challenges were pretty lame, but that doesn't mean people won't enter the next one. I'll be pissed if I you guys close the contest for lack of interest. It's like every contest I enter on this forum ends up the same way. You get like 2 submissions so you don't bother to pick a winner.
