COLOR ME PINK!
For the artists who want to practice colorin's skillz.

What it Color me pink??

A: Color Me Pink is a thread I'm starting in the hopes of helping aspiring [[up and coming artist]] to learn how to color better and HOPEFULLY find a unique coloring method for themselves. I will provide Hi-res lines that you are free to color at your disposal! There's no gimmick. You just save the image that you want to practice coloring with and go from there! Its as easy as a right click and save as! ANY ARTIST IS ALLOWED TO CONTRIBUTE LINEART because it gives more options to choose from in the end! :O

Why should I participate?

A:I'm not saying that you necessarily have to participate. Again its more of a tool to help others learn how to color. Or give them practice with color and not have to worry about finding an image to use. Of course you could just as easily find black and while line art but then you'd have to get the artists permission to color it and all that jazz. While here I just post, you pick, you color and you walk away happy. :)

But I don't like what you draw. Can you draw what I want?

A:Nope. This isn't a request station. Its just something that hopefully you'll be able to use to help better yourself as an artist. Or if you just want to try your hand at coloring stuff sometimes. Without all the creative thinking involved. What you see is what you get unfortunately. Maybe in the future I'll take requests but not at the present moment.

What styles of coloring does this support?

A:Well the styles you can use are CG, and digital. You could print out copies of these and then just color them by hands. I guess the sky is the limit honestly and truly!

I don't have a coloring program. What should I use to color???

A:Photoshop always works great. But if you don't want to pay for it I do believe Gimp is free. I like Paint Tool Sai currently. There are various other paint programs out there. Google is your friend in this case. :D

I've colored the art now what do I do???

A:Well you could post it here! Or your myspace or deviantart or where ever the case may be! I'd be more than willing to give critiques on your color choices [[light sources and things]] and I'm sure many of the other artists on here wouldn't mind saying what they feel as well! Use an image hosting site to upload your images. IE: Photobucket, etc.

Why did you pick the name Color Me Pink?

A:I don't know. I heard the phrase, "Well color me confused then!" once and I kept thinking it was "Well color me pink then!" and it just clicked like that. I don't like the color pink in reality. I don't know why.

I'm going to take credit for you drawing and there's nothing you can do about it!

A: While that is true there is no need to do that. By coloring it you already get partial credit so you get counted as a part of the creative process anyways. :) But I can't stop you. I don't encourage art theft one bit though! But if you can live with the guilt of saying that you took something that wasn't completely yours then go for it!

This thread seems like a waste of time...And your art sucks monkey jizz!!!

A: Why thank you! Critiques on my artwork are always appreciated as they help me to improve my skills and in term I'll be able to create better images for you to color! Of course I'm not looking for crits on this thread exactly. I have another thread for that somewhere around here...But they are always welcomed!

Enough with the Q-n-A's where's the art?!?!?
A: Right here!

Now I'm well aware that these aren't the best images. I haven't been drawing as much as I need too but hopefully this thread will help me get my but in gear! And I'm experimenting with line weight so be gentle. XD

NOTES:
I will constantly be updating this page/post with new lines for you to color that ways you won't have to browse though like 60+ pages of blah. So make sure you check back here for updates and what not. I will try to keep the image size just under 1MB but seeing as how they start off as 8.5x11 drawings and get saved at like 300dpi I think that might not always be the case. :p

Any questions?

PSD's AVAILABLE AT REQUEST!

In case you don't want to request PSD's.

this would be better if you had some helpful notes on color theory - or building working palettes. i'm not the best at coloring, and i'd certainly love to get better at it - but i don't see how just coloring things willy-nilly is going to teach me much! i'm not trying to be negative btw. :}

and tbh, while your lineart is very nice, i'm not seeing much variety. just rpg-ish wiminz :0

Ahh see the only problem is I don't know color theory that well. :( while they were teaching it in class I was busy flirting with the girls so I missed it. I figured I could just point out things here and there. Because I'm more of a painter myself. And my line of coloring comes from mixing colors while others might have methods of doing it. But I'll see what I can do!

And yeah I mainly draw womenz. :( I think they're easier to draw and not as blocky as guys. I can draw guys though. I'm on it!

EDIT: What would you like to see more drawings of then? Because if you just leave it up to me its going to be a thread full of women. :/

Very cool idea, Makasu. :thumb: I'm not a huge fan of scantily clad women, but I dare say I'll give a shot at one or two of these at some point. Posting the PSDs might be useful for transparency and such, though. Also, I might post that node thing I drew a while ago, but I'm not on my computer right now, so it'll have to wait.

As far as color theory goes, I'm really not an expert (someone like Ven might be able to shed more light on the subject), but I can throw out a few general pointers I've picked up from pixel art. Highlights should be yellower than shadows. This doesn't mean that highlights have to be yellow and shadows blue, though; it's relative. Colors in general tend to be very relative, which is something you can use to your advantage if you're trying to do subtle hue shifts--for example, gray will look bluish next to red and reddish next to blue. Also, if you have one light source, your work will look more unified if all of your color ramps tend towards the same shadow and highlight colors--and again, that doesn't mean they all have to be exactly the same, but if some of your shadows are brownish, they should in general all be brownish, although of course allowances have to be made for differences in lighting and material and such. Also, when picking palettes, it can often be helpful to not limit yourself to a smooth gradient from one shade to another--having hints of other colors in your palette can really add a lot. This is something I'm really bad at and can't give a lot of advice on, but uh, look at the rocks in front of Fool's awesome isometric castle to get an idea of what I'm talking about. He has both reddish and greenish tones in the color ramp for the rocks. Another random thing is that bounce light from skin on skin tends to be more saturated than the main skintone.

Er, that's all that comes to mind off the top of my head. Hope some of that's helpful!

@Peri: Thanks! Glad you like it. Hopefully it'll help some of the members here. Thats the general idea. But while I would love to post the PSD's they're like 20-40+ something megabytes for some odd reason. :( And I'm more than certain no one wants to download files that big for background transparency. Especially when they could just use the magic eraser tool! I should work the same...hopefully? I gotta test that out. And yes post em! Whatever you got post it because like I said it'll give people more options to choose from rather than my women. Haha.

Ven would know more about color theory seeing as how she's one of the big artsy people on here. Inq might as well.

Bluescope should post his lines here because he has lots of them! So Blue do it to it!

And well the way I see it color theory wise is the skin in general is made up of several different tones.

In black people skin you're more likely to find purples, blues and greens cool colors and in white people skin you'd find more yellowish, pink, peaches oranges and reds. Same for asians and hispanics.

I guess I could try to explain it better but I've always sucked at explanations. :(
If you want to be able to pick up tones better one thing I've heard is that if you squint your eyes you'll be able to pick out certain tones better. Not to sure though if it works that way. I'll have to look into that.

@Makasu: Chances are if you still have the original scan in the psd, that's what's creating the large file size. Another option for coloring a picture with a white background, is to simply put the layer on multiply and color on a layer underneath. It's much faster and easier then using an eraser.

This is a pretty neat idea I must say. If this had been around a few years ago when I was always looking for things to color, I'd be pretty interested.

This is a great idea-a good way to get people to learn how to colour. I'm definitely going to try this out and brush up on my colour theory (it's pretty lacking right now  ) I can't guarantee it'll be very pretty though! Oh, and I don't mind downloading huge .psd's, I'd download 'em if they were up there.

Seriously, I like this. Although I would suggest a little more variety in the line art next time.

NEW IMAGE AVAILABLE!!!!

Clouds%20in%20the%20sky.jpg

I got kinda lazy in some spots. I didn't want to draw all those damn scales. :p

@Racheal: That might actually be the reason why! Hahaha I forgot all about the scans taking up so much space. :) With that being said

PSD's available with request

@Dav: And well what would you like to see more of??? I mean I can draw lots of things. People and plants and animu and all sorts of things. Its just these are the things I usually draw. Hahaah. So yeah tell me what you'd like to see more of and I'll be more than happy to give it a go!

Glad people like the idea so far. :)

Can you do landscapes? Nothing too detailed, but just simple trees, buildings, outdoors type stuff. That's what I really need practice on right now. Even just simple houses or anything outside, really.

Dav: Actually I don't know. I never draw backgrounds. I sure I can though. They're just simple shapes. I'll give it a go! Anything outdoor related shouldn't be to hard to do...

Also is the latest image really small? I can't tell because my browser stretches things and shrinks them for some odd reason.

I'll also put up a somewhat coloring guide. Just cause.

PSD available upon request, too lazy to upload now. Sorry it's so small, but that's actually the size I drew it at for some reason... @_@ Honestly, I might resize to 2-300% and just color on top of the lines and then shrink at the end if you're gonna go for it, but that's me.

Seeing all this talk of PSDs made me throw this together real quick. It's a technique I figured out a while back to get lineart on its own layer without any real side effects:
layertutorial.jpg

This is for PS7, because I'm poor and don't have those fancy CS versions. It will work for them too, the shortcuts might just be different or something.

More on topic part of this post: I really like that last one you uploaded Makasu, I might give coloring it a try if I find some more free time.

There are already more than enough tutorials out there in internetland on how to effectively use color. But if someone posts summin here I'll be more than happy to give my opinions on their color theory, shading, and skill.

IMO this would have been done better with some planning ahead of time, so a larger breadth of styles and subjects could have been done. And these images DEFINITELY needed to be posted in a transparent format (really? posting them on a flat white background? tsk tsk). But it could be a good thread if people put their backs into it.

V: Its just because the images are saved as jpg that the background is white. Unless there is a way to just save lines and it not have a white background? I mean I do have PSD's available if anybody wants them. So the white background thing should really be an immediate issue. :p And if it is I apologize in advance for the inconvience to anyone.

But yeah it was a good idea just poorly executed. I admit that. But its a work in progress! :)

Save it as a PNG with an alpha layer (i.e. bump the "background" layer up to an alpha layer, then turn off the layer (so you see the grey/white checkboard pattern through the lineart), and save as a PNG. it will have a transparent background.). Or provide PSDs, doesn't matter.
