Concept

Cinnibar Town is a project based around the Harvest Moon series and set within the Pokemon universe. The game will be heavily text and character based and hopefully take place over a 3 year timespan. Instead of a farm you will be able to run a shop, creating, finding and buying, goods to sell to the various residents of the island. There will also be love interests and a few side quests.

Development

The mapping is 60% complete. With some of the exterior and all interior maps done. The map below is a first draft of the overall town map, comments or criticism would be welcome as I am hoping to tweak and improve this map as time goes on.

CinnaMart - A large store which caters to all the villagers needs

Cinnabar Library - A wealth of information in the form of books and data

Dojo Florist's - Formerly a karate dojo, now a blooming flower farm

Seafront Daycare - Provides care for Pokemon on a small offshore island

The Farmhouse - Sells all manner of berry products

The Knife and Fork - Traditional restaurant/inn, delicious home cooked food

The Beach Shack -A modern-style beach cafe

The Dockhouse - Handles all shipping and postal service on the island

The Smithy - Blacksmith's, they create tools and jewlery

Cinnabar Mine - Dig for ores, fossils and gems

Cinnabar Forest - Forage for flowers, plants and fruit

Main Characters

Player

A Pokemon trainer who retired young for reasons unknown. What drives you and motivates you to try and making a living on Cinnabar no one knows. You could be out battling Pokemon for riches and fame yet you have another goal in mind. Maybe eventually people will get close enough to you to discover what that is.

Meowth

A true enigma. A being you encountered on your way to Cinnabar island. He has the powers of speech yet he voices his opinions only to you. Every morning he will report to you with information about who you should talk to and some suggestions about where you should go to make money. Other than this he is his own master and wonders around town with no clear purpose. Cunning and sharp witted, he is eager to escape his presumably shady history and concentrate on helping you make some money.

Gameplay

Your character will begin with no money, living in the Inn, throughout the game he will be able to:

  • Forage for valuable items
  • Run errands for the villagers
  • Open up a market pitch and sell items
  • Cook and create flowers/plants
  • Open up a Pokemon daycare
  • Place bets on Pokemon fights
  • Marry one of 5 girls
  • Buy land for houses/shops
  • Open up a restaurant or a clinic
  • Interact and befriend villagers for multiple cut scenes
  • After 3 years, receive a different ending based on how you played the game

The villagers will keep you busy with a variety of jobs. They pay well and keep you on your toes.

Misc.

Sorry for the lack of information. I hope to have a more attractive and professional post soon with character bio's and some more gameplay details. Please bare with me for now and feel free to post any comments, criticisms or ideas about the project.

dunno what others will say about putting Haverst Moon with pokemon =/

but I guess it could work if you manage to pull it off correctly...or I could be wrong.

good luck.

So, you're using Pokémon tilesets with Harvest Moon sprites? The style sort of fits together, but not so well...

And yes, more information would be great, I'd like to see more.

is that the game map?? Sorry If I misunderstood what you said, but if that is the map it is pretty plain and boring! Othewr than that good luck with your project, because I am thinking onm making something similar lol.... Idea Stealer Jk...

Not with shop though...

Hey, sorry I've not been to clear before:
The game is made completely with Pokemon tilesets, charsets etc and its set within the Pokemon universe, with gyms, Pokemon Centres etc.
However the gameplay has more in common with Harvest Moon in terms of emphasis on character interaction and making a living.
Also I've tried to emulate certain characters from HM into the Pokemon world. This will become more clear when I put up character bio's but for example the Doctor and Elle now run the Pokemon centre.

About the map, I agree it does need work to make it more interesting and spaced out. That mock-up was done pretty quickly and I'll spend some more time trying to create a more detailed one. However the same 14 buildings will be present.

Hey just an update
I've completely revamped the map.
Its not perfect but I think its a big improvement.
I know at the moment theres not a lot of information to go on. But any comments, ideas or criticisms would still be welcome, and I'm working on updating the post.
Thanks.

P.S: The new map is only for the North side of town, the beach and the forest are still unfinished.

Hm...I kinda interested in this project.I'm dunno but lately i'm attracted to Pokemon...Hm...anyway,putting up more in-game screens can help you advertise more of this project.

Ok, I've just fully completed mapping (with the mine, beach and mountains all finished) So I'm gonna start work on the actual game. I'll post some mock-up's of things you'll be able to do in the actual game.

Just to say. I've put up 4 screenshots, they contain various aspects of the game as well as some of the interior mapping.

Also, making a for girl version would be too much work, so instead I'm thinking of adding in one marriable guy just so I don't exclude a large percentage of potential players. Hopefully no one would get offended by that, it just makes things easier, and won't really get in the way of gameplay for those marrying the girls.
Thanks.

Can you marry the guy if you're not a girl? XD
If you're spending most of your time in the same areas, but with changes in your jobs in those areas, I would really spend a lot more time on the mapping. The pokemon tilesets are ok, but if you could I'd really recomend that you find a way to not have to enlarge them so much. The same goes for the characters; they're a bit too grainy. In terms of the actual map, I'd try to make them a lot more complicated and bigger. You could then add a mike to make it easier to get around.

The game as a concept I love though. As long as there was plenty to do to carry on a main story while you were maintaining your farm, it could really take off.

Yeah you can, I'm not too sure which guy thats going to be yet (I have the characters planned and started but that idea was spur of the moment) But I'll make sure to include him at some point.

I know what you mean with the mapping, I have a copy of the Pokemon Starter Kit which has resizing/resolution scripts, but I'm having trouble seperating those from the ones in the starter kit that I don't want to use because they all seem dependant on eachother (if that makes sense)

I'll have another attempt at mapping the overworld. Do you think the interiors also need work?

Thanks for your input, and I'm gonna take a lot of time in making sure theres plenty to keep you occupied. Hopefully it'll have replay value as there'll be different endings depending on how you played the game (who you married, how much money you made, how many friends etc.)

it's cinnibar island

haven't you ever played the game before? (and no "it takes place AFTER red and blue and they changed the name" because it was IN the gold and silver versions and it was DESTROYED BY A VOLCANO)

The setting isn't really canon with the Pokemon series.
I just needed an island location really. The reason why I named it Cinnibar town is because the game is focuses on social interaction with a lot of different characters. I thought town reflected that more than island.

True your map looks better, but still I Think it's too empty, and it would bore me quite easily, try adding more buildings, Radio tower, lab etc... Make it bigger with lots of things to explore, just that.

I will look foward to future updates!

Keep going!

I can try and make the map bigger but adding more buildings could be a problem. Because each building means a family of between 2-4 people to run/inhabit it. And each person needs their own cut scenes, side-quests etc.
If youve played the game Harvest Moon FOMT, the game manages to include a lot of gameplay within a quite small map. I'm trying to go for that effect.

I have to say it's nice to see a game that isn't about some epic quest. I am looking forward to playing this. The map looks fine to me, personally, although I did notice the umm fountain/square area is a bit plain, though if you have people walking around that may not be as noticable.

If not, you might consider adding something there, I'm not sure how limited you are with the pokemon graphics though.

Yeah, that is the truth! When I made the first Corona! the Game, I learned one thing: a Harvest Moon-like game with more than 20 characters is a genuine hell to program! This is a cool project, but is there any kind of substory beyond the whole managing-shop thing, like maybe some mystery to find out, like why Cinnabar Volcano erupted (early start of Team Magma?)
