Chronicles of Revery [Concept Release] - Please Critique

2ebhngn.gif

This Action-RPG is based in a fantasy world, you play the role of Jackson Revery. I have been constructing this concept for roughly six months now and believe it is ready to be presented to the community. There is still a long way to go with this project and I strongly encourage comments and criticism in relation to my works. I was originally considering putting this thread in the "Concept Development" form, however decided against it as I already have a solid concept, and do not wish to ruin the key twists and plots of my story through devolving any relative information.

There is No Demo available as of yet. I'm still a while from the first release.

About Me
I have been an RPG Maker user for as long as I can remember (probably since RPG Maker 95), and follow this community closely. I am 19 years old currently studying for two diploma's in business. I've spent a lot of time developing story concepts and this is one of the two that I've invested a large portion of my spare time to.

This next part is a shot and sweet summary of the extended storyline & character profiles I will eventually have contained within this post.

Summary

Hundreds of years ago six children we're born under exceptional circumstances. These children are known today as the "bringers of magic", or the "True Gods". As they lived out their lives they showed they're exceptional powers and brought many dramas onto the world. They brought the gifts and the curses of magic and demonstrated its impact. The marks they've made on the planet are still prominent today.

As time progressed the gods gradually died, most of them killed off during wars. The gods each had they're own beliefs of how the world should operate, what was right and what was wrong. It was very rare for all of them to be in agreement; as a result it became a constant battle; a fight for survival. Throughout the many battles, gods that held similar beliefs clustered together; they're followings we're often a such a large portion of the populace, and the death tolls so high that humanity as a whole began to suffer the consequences. After many of the gods had died; Gaia, the god of nature separated the world into three main continents and created a temporary peace - allowing humanity to repopulate. Though the peace did not last as Sanal (The god of destruction) simply used the time Gaia provided to strengthen an army and prepare an invasion. Not much is known about the final days of the gods, there are very few documents related to that era.

Today the world is divided into three superpowers; Eade, Amondol and Myran. Amondol was the most powerful nation for much time after the death of the gods. The general understanding is that Sanal was the last god to die and ruled mostly over Amondol; attempting to strengthen his grasp on the world resulted in its post-war global supremacy. Myran is considered a quiet nation where the few who dwell, look for no more than calmness and simplicity. It has attempted to avoid war and live in prosperity. There are many mysteries of Myran which few outside the nation are aware of. The nation of Eade held strong against Sanal through the final years of war. Few know how they defended against the power of Sanal however Ryu is generally given credit. Ryu is known well throughout Eade - claiming to be a direct decedent of Athes (the god of creation). Ryu is commonly referred to as the Demi-god of light and known as one of the most powerful Demi-gods in existance. It is not known how many Demi-Gods are in existence because since the end of the wars they avoid drawing attention to themselves for many reasons.

Eade is the continent which Jackson Revery call's home; growing up during the "Blood War" Jackson was taught how to handle a blade at a young age. Jackson has a sister and a brother however after waking with severe injuries Jack remembers very little about his past. Bits and pieces come together very early in the story and create a strong personality for our main character. This is where the story begins...

Jackson Revery AKA Jack
Living with his loving sister and spoiled brother, Jack was contently challenged to improve and best them at their games. Jack became quick to grasp things and was fascinated at a young age by one of the only things he couldn't achieve: the ability to use magic. Idolizing Ryu (The Demigod of light) as a child he focused on what was morally right, admired the kindness of his sister and despised his selfish brother.

For the first ten years of jack's life his kingdom was at war with the most powerful nation on the planet at that time: Amondel. He was taught combat at a very young age and was strongly encouraged to learn how to protect himself. His strengths we're in his intellect, the ability to assess situations and think "outside the box". Jack made friends with Damaris; a royal Mage to the king and developed strong respect for him. Through time they began to view each other as equals and after several years passed they considered one another, brothers.

After the war had subsided there was only one other superpower which had a strong alliance with Eade. Several years passed in peace and prosperity. The only fighting was of Rebellious factions and battles of some of the last known demigods. Ryu defended the nation admirably, and became the envy of a large amount of demigods corrupt by power.

Damaris
Damaris is a royal mage to the king, well learned in the arts of magic and battle hardened. He is considered a very powerful *Study-Mage, well known for some of his campaigns against the post-war Rebels. Damaris grew up in nobility and initially presents as a very "By-the-book" militant. His relationship with Jack is held strong with trust and history. Damaris would gladly die for Jack, and Jack would return the favor.

Prior to joining the Royal Guard and after his expulsion from his original nobility, Damaris was a mercenary working with a group titled Band of the Wolf. For many years he worked for the soul reason to earn money. As his abilities began to manifest the band grew wary of his power, fearful. They attempted to assassinate him during his sleep however Damaris had gained prior knowledge of there fear and taken appropriate measures to defend himself.Little is known about Damaris, he tends to avoid speaking of himself and holds mostly unbiased, logical opinions.

*= A study-mage is a mage who was not born into magic, but rather gained the ability through study or knowledge. Not everyone can become a mage, it requires specific traits generally accompanied by exceptional intelligence. The gods had the ability to grant people the power of magic, some Demi-Gods had the same ability. Study-Mages manage to acquire the same or a similar effect as the "blessing" through different means.

Merth
Merth is next in line to the throne, son of King Sebastian and Prince of Eade. He is well known for his bluntness and brutality on the battlefield. Well educated and very intelligent, Merth is the oldest child in his family. His father holds him in high regards and there are few who would risk their lives and mention his brutality to the king. As a military strategist Merth is known for wasting lives and in spite of Merths requests, his father often attempts to keep him out of battle.

Merth grew up throughout the "Blood War" and was taught the fundamentals of combat and strategy as he grew of age. He took a firm liking to the military in spite of his poor tactics; forcing his way into a commanding position through his stature - he is a unpredictable and relentless strategist often daring to do things that most commanders wouldn't even consider.

Valentine AKA Val
Valentine is Merth's sister, born into royalty Val has endured her brothers obsessiveness with combat. Like her brother she possesses high intelligence, however has spent more time studying people than combat. She is very loving towards her family members and is considered generous and kind. She is a direct contrast to Merth's personality and typically distrusts her brother; but defends his actions all the same.

More to come...

History - This is going to take several sessions to write up, most of it is planned on paper and has not yet been typed.

This is to set the world in which my game takes place. These are my concepts and background that play a part in the construction, aging and beliefs of the planet and people I create. This is MOSTLY for my reference; and note that these are summaries, I have more information on each event written down.

Brief History of Witches.
Before gods granted the use of magic, there we're small groups of people all over the world believing the idea of magic, the concept of manipulating energies with the mind. They we're often considered crazy or insane for they're beliefs and ideas. They spent years attempting to understand the universe and they used trickery to encourage belief among the larger portion of the population. They understood the mind more than most other people of the time and as a result carved a comfortable niche in society for the majority of recorded history.

Eventually, and over several years their lies and trickery became obvious and new scholars began to discredit them. The idea of magic was quickly dismissed and frowned upon, people grew afraid of they're powers and blamed their influence on manipulation of the mind. It became apparent to authorities that "magic" was not something to be taken lightly and all associated ideas were quickly outlawed. The societies continued to exist in secret, and small cities were built by them which often held strong economic relations to the larger kingdoms. These people became referred to as witches.

The Bringers of Magic
There was a single day in history which some people consider the most important of all; it began a spiral of events which changed the world forever. This was the day that six children we're born. There is much story behind these children and they're lives; this will, hopefully shed some light on gods, and the world they grew up in.

Childhood of Sanal

Sanal's "mother" was air to a noble fortune, however at the age of 28 she suddenly fell I'll. She began to deteriorate very quickly and was rushed to a medical center, she soon after died of unknown causes. Her family could not bear the sight or suffering for long and left her for peace in the afterlife. For hours she lied unattended, a corpse among many in the hospital that day.

When her corpse was finally tended to; they found no woman to speak of, only ashes surrounding a skeleton. Lying in the ashes was a baby, with no known relations. The child was cared for in an infirmary at the hospital while the matter regarding the woman's death was investigated by authorities. After two weeks and no progress they decided to leave the child with an orphanage. They named the child Sanal, meaning "lost" after the woman who had died in such a mysterious manner.

Years passed and Sanal grew in the orphanage, at the age of six Sanal's powers began to manifest. Things he touched would turn to ash, evaporate or melt in his hands. He spent much effort attempting to conceal and control his early abilities knowing that "magic" was outlawed. One night he got into a heated argument with one of his friends. That night Sanal left the orphanage because of he wanted to do. What he had the ability to do. What he was afraid of doing.

For a large portion of his early life, Sanal lived alone and in poverty. Stealing and begging to sustain himself. He made the choice to live in the way that he did, and he understood that. It was his fear of himself that kept him from returning to the orphanage, nothing else. He grew into his early teenage years before finding a group of witches who also lived in poverty; stomped out of mainstream society. These witches took in Sanal and he was fascinated by they're concepts of magic and the way they dreamed of such power. It took some time before Sanal was prepared to display his abilities to the Witches, but once he did he was quickly encouraged and worshiped as a prodigy. These witches then taught him the morals that he held for the rest of his life; that killing was sometimes unavoidable and that the people who disagree with the use of magic are stubborn and do not have the right to outlaw the use of what would potentially change the world.

Over the remainder of his teenage years he gained a large following in his medium-sized town, as a result he quickly gained a prominent ego. The witches sparked a thirst for power within sanal and understanding that knowledge is power, he saught to do much study over the rest of his life. At the age of 19 Sanal decided that the towns government was inefficient and he ceased control of it with much ease. Much of the town had to be taken by force, and many people died by the hands of Sanal. His powers developed with much speed and through his rule of the town and his quickly developing ego; he began to become corrupt with the power he possessed.

Sanal turned the town into a safe haven for witches and the like, generously giving to those who had been considered inferior or criminal. He began teaching the arts of his magic to those who we're interested, showing the essential components of magic that even he couldn't understand. The people who Sanal blessed, and who spent time around Sanal developed powers very quickly; Sanal saw very early in his teachings that even though he wanted these people to learn his power; they lacked something vital. They could never have the power he did; and this only fueled his ego.

Several attempts we're made to claim back the small town which Sanal had taken, however each failed; Sanal and his students we're one of the smallest and most powerful forces on the planet at that time. Sanal quickly grew annoyed of these people interfering with his work and began constructing a campaign against those who did not accept the common use of magic.

It is said that during planning of the campaign Gaia; the god of nature, still just as young as Sanal had learned his intent and visited the city in which he resided. Gaia spent many weeks around the edge of the city, viewing the vast landscape. In the single night that she left there grew a forest as tall as the sky and as thick as the air. The forest had been enchanted by Gaia to prevent anyone from leaving; and it contained Sanal within his kingdom for the remainder of his youth.

Athes and the acceptance of magic.
Athes spent much of his young life under his father's influence, his father was a loyal soldier and honest man. As Athes reached early adulthood; word reached the kingdom that there we're magicians in a distant town. Magic was commonly known as something that would always bring hardship on the world.

Athes was a brilliant student and loved studying history, he would always dream of having influence over the world, wishing he had been born into a royal family and was destine to rule a nation. Athes never understood the fear of magic, history explained how the witches had shaped the early world into a relatively peaceful place with the aid of magic and persuasion; however this new magic was told to be something entirely new. Some people shrugged this off in disbelief, many we're outraged and demanded action, few went to seek out and understand this new magic.

The same year Athes turned twenty, word reached his kingdom that the Magicians had taken over the town, and that they we're becoming a recognizable threat to the world. Athes father was one of the soldiers sent in an attempt to claim back the small town and control the threat. Athes disagreed with the entire idea of eliminating magic, believing that the world could be a better place if it was simply accepted. Athes watched his father's battalion leave the kingdom, thirty thousand men being sent to remove what they didn't understand from the world.

He sat on a cliff side for hours after they left, contemplating the idea of magic and how it should help the world. He drew a figure in the sand, of a bird. A large flaming hawk that had been in his repeating dreams. He picked up the sand and filtered it through his hands like an hour glass. It felt warm from the recently set sun. As the sand began to deplete he felt it grow warmer, thinking it odd he opened his palm to find a tiny, very warm, orange egg.

Athes spent the next several weeks in his room, marveling at the egg - wondering how it had come into existence and if it was a sign. When it eventually hatched, it exposed what appeared to be embers, tiny glowing embers compressed together to structure the body of a tiny living bird. Athes understood the relation to his dreams, the bird was a creation of his imagination. He suddenly grew frightened of it and he understood that somehow he had achieved the power he had always wanted.

He sent much of the next few years learning his abilities, grasping the ideals of creation and the limits of his power. The small bird grew quickly, and once it had learned to fly, it ignited into the flaming hawk which Athes had dreamed of. It became far to obvious to keep within the household and in spite of his personal attachment to it; he was forced to free the bird to keep his secrecy. He left his mainstream study and focused on developing his magic, learning to shape creations with his own hands. For years he received no word of his father's endeavors and gradually forgot his childhood and focused on his future. He attempted to break into politics several times, however considering his age few people supported his endeavors.

When Athes was 24 he decided to move to the world capital and focus entirely on being accepted into politics. He created an empty shell of a human body, and elder man who visually presented as a wise person. He was a piece of art and Athes was particularly proud of this creation as it was directly linked to Athes' thoughts and senses. He proceeded to move into politics using this puppet and focused entirely on legalizing general magic. Athes' first "politician puppet" was sentenced to death for being a witch, but he continued his endeavors until he found a subtle enough approach and succeeded in legalizing trickery "magic" solely as a form of entertainment.

From there; society began to marvel at magic, witches began to prosper as entertainers rather than politicians. Athes had began a world interest in magic; which was only the first step of his plans. It took many years for Athes to construct a solid argument for the use of common magic. He put fourth the debate multiple times and eventually convinced the larger majority of the politicians into accepting general use of magic. Once magic was legalized the politician puppets he constructed had no more use, Athes became a prophet; a known god able to heal wounds and restore life. He created whole and prosperous kingdoms for those that followed him. He became a focal point for three other gods who had been too afraid to present their powers; Rayden, Halidor and Kenit. All who followed him prospered for many years and those that didn't; were left in they're own peaceful kingdoms far away from Athes' territory.

Rebellion.
Rayden was born on the outskirts of a small town not far from the world capital. He led an unfortunate childhood at the hands of his overly-abusive father and tortured stepmother. At the age of 12 Rayden was imprisoned for murdering his father in his sleep and prison was where Rayden spent the majority of his early life. He was never a loud or abusive person himself and spent much time in an odd silence, however the few people who aggravated him learned from their mistakes quickly. Rayden was released from prison at the age of 20 and got a job in a blacksmiths in the world capital, he forged great weapons and loved the work he did - the fire, the water and the steam put him at ease in his day-to-day life.

During Rayden’s job he found that he had the ability to manipulate the elements around him, create figures in the steam and expand or compress the water. Fire could not harm him and water would respond to his movements. He put his abilities to use in his job, creating some of the most superior weaponry and armour ever made. He remained quiet about his abilities and became one of the most successful blacksmiths of all time.

With time and practice his abilities developed a stage where he no longer needed a forge or anvil; he could heat the metal, shape the metal and cool the metal with his own two hands. He knew his abilities would not be accepted but soon after he had mastered his abilities, magicians began to appear around the town. People who claimed to have magic abilities when ultimately they just produced trickery.

Rayden quickly became interested in politics, listening for changes and carefully watching the way the world was shaping up. He watched as new politicians began to change the way magic was generally seen and eventually – he watched Athes construct a magnificent monument to celebrate the acceptance of magic. Rayden approached Athes cautiously during the first couple of days in which he had arrived. He spoke in subtle riddles and sought what Athes knew of others with magical abilities and found that Athes knew considerably little. After a couple of meetings Rayden admitted his powers to Athes, who encouraged Rayden to show the world.

From there Rayden ruled alongside Athes and they were soon joined by two travellers, claiming to be brothers – Kenit and Halidor. Each of which had a unique ability, Kenit having control over space and Halidor having control over time, however each of them had to be near one another for their abilities to work. For years they led a prosperous kingdom however each of them had different opinions of how laws should be governed. Normally Athes would prevail, and this frustrated Rayden. Over time Rayden began to envy Athes and believed him ignorant of the real world. As time passed Rayden remained in silent resentment until he one day received a letter... signed by Sanal.

Over the following weeks Rayden spent much time secretly researching and reading what had happened to the small town of Veri which had been wiped off the map. He only found a few details about what happened including a couple of references to “Black Magic”. Intrigued and frustrated at Athes, he left and sought after this town in an attempt to understand what had happened and possibly provide himself with an edge over Athes’ stubborn ignorance.

Arriving at the edge of Gaia’s enchanted forest Rayden attempted to walk through it for days, yet he found that no matter how straight he walked into the forest, he would wind up exiting at the same place. In his frustration he ignited a path straight through the forest – a path which still burns brightly today.

The begining of wars.

I would appreciate any help I could get, if you're interested in this project feel free to contact me with how you can help. I'm a jack of "digital" trades when it comes down to it, I have the ability to make this game on my own, and make it well. However; odds are it will end up like every other production where the producer bit off more than they could chew. This is an ambitious project and I am a lonely soldier fighting the war.

It would be good to have a concept artist, my sketches are a little shameful. I once had talent with a pencil, now I have none. Just out of practice.

Area's I find difficult to continually focus on:
-General Mapping, including basic eventing. I enjoy eventing complex scenarios or dungeons however often loose interest and find it difficult to be constructive.
-Scripting; Most of my scrips are provided by the community. I've modified them to some extent and am a rather mediocre programmer however it's not my forte'. Often I get lost for hours before finally understanding a code.
-Graphic edits. This is last on my list; I am fluent with graphic design and manipulation but the sheer quantity of work here has made me use a lot of community provided graphics. I'm not fussed, the people in the RMXP community are generous and talented, however it is important to have some visual originality.

Again, I'm willing to accept any help. If you simply would like to read over all the plot twists and turns and scrutinize them; I'd be glad to get some feedback.

Well I'm surprised this project has received as little attention as it has, I feel it deserves a lot more so I think I'll get the ball rolling. I can't provide an in-depth critique at this point in time but I'll give some on the points I can see at the moment.

My first point is that of your main character, Jack. You don't give a specific age for him but the way you've described him and the fact he is still living with his family leads me to believe that Jack is still of a young age (in terms of becoming a seasoned warrior/mage). Generally this is a bad clichè to follow however the rest of the characters seem developed so it leads me to believe that Jack's age will become an irrelevant point and you may break the typical 16 year old farm boy saves the world scenario.

The second point I'll make is the fantastic use of the default? RTP tilesets, you've put them to an exceptional standard particularly in the second shot inside the church. Although I think you'd be far better of investing in a all-in-one tileset, as that adds huge variation to the amount of tiles you could use on one map which would give it the feel of a more developed map. It is particularly evident in the final screenshot in the cave which is very nicely mapped but the lack of foliage variation or even stones and such leaves it feeling rather bare regardless of how well its mapped (the height variation and stuff is excellent).

My final point is the HUD, it looks fantastic albeit a little intrusive. While this may be a good thing in combat you may want to consider letting the player hide specific parts of it on a key press, for example hiding the hotkey bar and such.

In general it looks like a very nice game and I for one can't wait to see it developed further.

First and Foremost, thank you for you feedback. If this post had reached the bottom of the page before being noticed I think I'll be a tad disheartened. :haha:

Initially I've intended the profile of Jack to be very vague. I do not want people to understand him before they play as him; the key effect I'm looking for is that the player progresses with the character and the story at the same time. The fact that he presents to you as a clichè is no surprise, but I assure you that I have attempted to avoid expectations within my storyline. For clarification jack is closer to the age of 26. Still young, but he has actually had a lot of military and combat experience and has fought alongside Damaris in battle. MUCH clarity will be given to jack's character within the first chapter of the story; at the end of the first chapter you should know who jack is, what his current goal is and how he initially relates to most of the listed characters.

One of my biggest fears of this process I've selected is that this information may appear misleading depending on your interpretation. Some vital information is deliberately left out for the player to experience in-game...

To address your second point; yes I have used default tile sets, however its mostly due to the fact that they've fit the theme so far. I have several "All-in-one" tilesets which I plan to use but honestly I'm so fussy with the passability options that I find it far easier to use the default's if they fit the scenario. Not a whole lot is finished on the maps, they will be reworked multiple times before I'm completely satisfied with them; and may be entirely different by the time a Beta is released. I'm focusing on completing (Writing, mapping and eventing) chapter one storyline before I go back and visually fix it to my liking and debugging it. Adding the "Extra" details if you like.

The entire HUD can be toggled, my scripting experience is not that extensive - the HUD was actually one of the first things I created using Mr Mo's HUD template.

PS: I've almost finished typing up the next section regarding Sanal's childhood.

You're very welcome about the feedback, I had my eye on this since you posted it but I've not had a lot of time so the first few minutes I got made sure I posted so I wouldn't have worried about it dropping off the first page just yet.

I understand that you probably wanted to give an overview of the character without ruining too much of the detail which is why I only touched on him seeming partially clichè. I misjudged his age by quite a while as well, a further movement away from that typical character I had initially assumed.

The fear your having is perfectly normal, its hard to describe and draw people in without giving away key plot elements or a gameplay video but I'm pretty sure when you get some more screenshots and information up you'll have quite the following develop.

As for your mapping I get the point of you preferring to use the default tiles and you manage to pull it off well for the most part but its a tileset limitation that it is bound to look bare at least partially due to the limited variation available. The style fits perfect from what I can tell, but in my opinion Enterbrain hit the nail on the head with the RTP for fantasy setting games so I'd stick with it.

The fact you've got a toggle key for the HUD is also very nice, good to see that feature being used well. As I said the graphics for the HUD look wonderful but if your not in a combat situation it might be nice to toggle it off and experience the mapping and general game.

I look forward to more future updates, will be reading Sanal's childhood when its posted.

Updated with two new chapter summary's for the History;
The childhood of Sanal and
