Checking for Non-Normal State [ RESOLVED ]

I am crafting a section of script that replaces the hero's name with a state if he does not have "normal" status. This is designed to only exist in battle. My script tidbit is in Window_BattleStatus, but I don't know what to put after if:

if #...this is where I need to detect if an actor has a non-normal state.
    draw_actor_name(actor, actor_x + 12, 88)
else
    draw_actor_state(actor, actor_x + 12, 88)
end

I've tried a few error-clad methods, including messing with the make_battler_state_text method in Window_Base. I'm not sure what to mess with anymore. Thanks for help in advance, of course!
