I feel uncomfortable with the button

During playtesting, press "F1" and under the "Keyboard" tab, change Z: [A] to Z: [C].

(C is the confirm button, B is the cancel/menu button, and A is just an extra.)

There are also several things you can use in lieu of [space], like the C key.

But yes, you can press F1 to redefine the controls during a game.

Alternatively, get yourself a USB gamepad. They're a reasonable investment, and you can also use them to play all those beat-em-ups, flight-sims and emulated games you would otherwise find it difficult to play.

Is that permanent change?

Only on your computer. You can change the controls back to default anytime by pressing F1 again.
