(I am no longer going to announce release dates or add anything more than screenshots to this thread. We suck at deadlines, so hear this: It will be done when it's done, and you'll just have to hold your breath! I will, however, keep this meter updated and this thread clean.)
(I'm restarting this because the old one was cluttered, and this is prettier)

In the far off land of Medieval Canadia, there lived an enormous midget. His name was Bildo, and he was so large that he had legitimate claim to being the second tallest midget who ever lived. Hundreds of years before our story begins, he saved the kingdom from certain destruction, earning the respect of the people, and immortality granted him by the Well of Unnaturally Long Life. Now, the greatest hero the land has ever known has dissapeared, as the country needs him once more.

Will he answer the call? Will he save Canadia from the Dread Sovereign Lord Cactus? Will Captain Tim ever be able to repay his credit card bills?!

The answers and more all lie within.

This, my friends, is the story of Bildo the Midget and his noble Canadian Knights.

(The blank character holders will not be in the final version - this is currently a simple limitation of the graphical theme being employed.)

Great battle screen. This is one of the projects I'm most looking forward to playing someday. :)

One suggestion: Try keeping the font in the battle status black like the other menu. It's hard to read the orange on orange.

A message from Nick:

Hello wonderful minions... This is Veilthedarkness/Nick, the other half of Canadian Knights. I'm the face of Captain Indescribably Ugly. So, I'm working on remixed music right now and I'm composing new "character themes" for every relevant character. I'm also chopping up Captain Tim's dialog and processing it, and I'll be attempting to voice... THE RATLORD!! Hopefully sooner than later, but better late than never. Once the sound is done, I'll move on to whatever graphic-aciousness is yet required. Tony will tell me what to do and I have to do his bidding: 10 years ago when we were 13 and 12, we were playing some Tekken and all of a sudden he captured my soul in a Mountain Dew can and handed me a gun. He said, "Go kill the Mayor." I replied, "That's terrible!" Tony said only, "Dude, it's just politics."

He actually posted this as me in the old, closed Canadian Knights topic. I don't know how the hell he keeps getting my password.

I don't have the words for how much I love this idea.

Everything so far looks fantastic, and I'm sure the end product will be equally awesome. ^^

This is hilarious. I look forward to playing this. What made me wanna come here was the face of the guy in your signature. I've never seen anything that funny!

Will he be in the game? (The 'Canadian Knights, bitches" guy)

Yes, the Canadian Bastard will be in the game ("The Canadian Knights, Bitches!" Guy)

A lot of you may be wondering why this demo, which is only a good 30 minutes of playable game, is taking us so long? Besides the fact that this demo and prologue chapter was an after though that was hastily tacked to the front of the Chapter 1 we were almost finished with, basically - the truth is that I don't work on it very often.

Consider this my final excuse - I have ADD so bad, I literally can't sit straight. I don't have the attention span required to work on Canadian Knights, so I am officially putting this demo on hold until next week when I officially begin treating again.

I really want to get this thing out. Nick and I have in no way lost interest in the project, and it is certainly not cancelled. I accomplish small tasks from time to time, usually sitting down with it for maybe 30 minutes every week. That's a horrible work schedule.

I'm hoping prescription amphetemines will get me on top of this thing.

Another part is that I've been investing my creative bursts of energy to a comic series that Nick and I are writing, and hoping to get published in a month or so. It's a series of 3-panel newspaper style comics styled after Red Meat and Get Your War On. Look them up if you are familiar, they rock.

Anyway, I apologize to everyone who's been waiting patiently for this project to come to fruition. I wish I had a better excuse, but if any of you have ADD, you know what I'm talking about. Just thinking about working on Canadian Knights makes me exhausted.

You WILL love this game.

Being a Half-Canadian myself, I simply cannot wait for this game. I honestly laughed when I saw the battle screen, I do believe this shall be quite the humorous game worth showing to my other friends :P

Oh! And I have been diagnosed with ADD too, so I do understand =P

Is it just a coincidence or is the Indy in your game the same Indy or Indinera who made the Laxius Power Series? Just wondered, btw, it looks great and I love when real people are used in a game! it just makes it so much funnier! :D

I don't think so... This Indy is the captain of the Canadian Royal Guard, Captain Indescribably Ugly (he was an orphan, and the letter left on the basket he was discovered in read only, "Indescribably ugly" - so they assumed it was his name.)

Although, I was thinking the other day, and I should run this by Nick, the co-writer (and the actor who plays Indy), but if Indy was adopted by Captain Timid T. Snuggles (that's Captain Tim, to you), wouldn't his name be Indescribably Ugly Snuggles?

Somehow, that's not better.

Still running on your battle system extensions, no less!

Oh, so hey, I did a bunch of script editing yesterday, which was kind of important since battles and all that jazz were the least finished. Really, because of the statistic ranges I wanted to use (Think: Small numbers), the battle system was outright broken, and wasn't scaling correctly.

I've fixed this, and in doing so completely rewrote the basic damage algorithm (defense and str work much differently in Canadian Knights than you may be used to). More specifically, all of your stats in Canadian Knights are percents!

Armor Piercing
Damage Reduction
Accuracy
Evasion

What happens now is the difference of the defender's damage reduction and the attacker's armor piercing is added back to the damage reduction.

So if an enemy with 55% armor piercing hits Bildo who has, let's say, 60% damage reduction, the math works out like this -

60% - 55% = 5%

60% + 5 % = 65%

In this exchange, Bildo's final damage reduction is 65%!

Or, what if the enemy has 55% armor piercing and Bildo has 45% damage reduction?

45% - 55% = -10%

45% + (-10%) = 35%

In this example, Bildo's damage reduction is effectively sundered by the enemy.

The way this works out may seem funky, but this gives the characters a distinct advantage over weaker enemies, and makes bosses much scarier. Also note that damage reduction and armor piercing values don't vary much throughout the game. You may gain a permanent +1% bonus to Damage Reduction every 2-3 levels, depending on your class, and you will be given choices of armor that will vary it a bit. For example, one shop may have 3 suits of armor for Bildo, one providing +20 HP and +24% damage reduction, one providing +10HP and +32% damage reduction, and one providing +30 HP and +18% damage reduction.

I'm contemplating removing levels altogether, instead tying all of your statistics to your class and equipment. I can't quite decide.

What do you guys think?

I also say do away!! At least that's what I'm doing. Equipment is used to alter my characters so much that leveling isn't really important. I want the player to fight battles because the battle system is fun, not to get stronger in an artificial sense, but that the player is actually getting better at using the system.
Based on your commitment and time and the way you speak about the game, I have a wonderful feeling about it. Trust your instincts, like with the percent stats and such, if it's fun when you playtest it, it will do well.
Just thought I'd rally in my support for this game. I'm really looking forward to it!

This game looks like it's going to be absolutely hysterical. I can't wait for the demo.

However, I don't think you should do away with leveling entirely. That places too much importance on just your equipment, and restricts the player in that sense. What you should do, in my opinion, is decrease the importance of leveling and give some of the weight to the equipment, but not all of it. That way, players will never have to grind for levels, but they will have a little more leg room in terms of what equipment they can wear. That also allows you to do more interesting things with the equipment. I love FFIX's method of learning skills from equipment, and in a no-leveling system that sort of thing wouldn't be possible.
