Can ya'll breakdown Earthbound for me?

This might sound kinda odd, and I hoped I've put this in the right forum, but here it goes....

....I come in and browse these threads and see people talking about rpg's, most of which I've never seen or heard of. I'm just a casual gamer who happens to be fascinated with the idea of creating an original game (which is currently up to 5+ hours). In fact, the only rpg's I've ever beaten are Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy III (I've gotten about half-way through Chrono Cross). And of these three, Earthbound is hands down my favorite....and it's not even close. In fact, my game is heavily influenced by Earthbound.....so here my request....

Could you guys who've extensively played rpg's kinda break this game down for me and let me know what things you feel Earthbound did well and what things it didn't do so well......along with any other random insights.....just so I know what the gaming community thinks about the game I'm kinda patterning mine after....

Cons:

For the most part, the battle system in Earthbound was just smashing the B button until your thumb was blue on one side. I think that coulda been made better.

It also lacked any sense of puzzle, which was detrimental.

The limited sized inventories, and separate inventories for each player just made it a hassle to equip everyone and organize your loot.

Pros:

Graphics and Sound were perfect. They both played very well into the theme and atmosphere the game creates.

The wide variety of enemies (albeit mostly recolors) helped liven up combat, and the on-touch encounters helped the experienced player make it through the game faster.

The characters and status effects were awesome, too.

It's been a while since I played Earthbound. I'll try to scrounge up what little memory I have of it and comment;

Pros:-
- The graphics were colorful, and the characters were cute.
- The no-random battles system
- The storyline caught my attention. It's not your average "hero-wannabe-saving-the-world" thing. (then again, I barely played half-way, so...i dunno much bout the rest of the storyline.
- If I remember correctly...the inventory-menu-thingy was nice too.

Cons:-
- The battle system was a HUGE turn-off for me. Probably one of the main reasons why I didn't continue playing.
