Can i use commercial sprites for a non-commercial game?

Hey there peeps! ^^

I was just wondering if there was anything wrong with me using sprites from commercial games in a game that i'm making. I'm not going to sell it or anything so i thought it would be alright, but i just want to check.

Thanks in advance ^^

actually everything you use without permission whatsoever would be illegal. But since your game isnt commercial the companies wont do anything, because they dont care...

That's not entire true.

I do believe an independent gaming company went to make I believe it was Chrono Trigger in 3D and from what I heard, was going pretty amazing. Squaresoft/Squareenix came in and closed them down real quick like.

Will you always get caught, probably not. Is it professional? Far from it.

Just have some custom sprites made, or use the ones that are free to use. You don't have to have a commercial sprite. Your sprites should reflect your characters, and if it is reflected by Tidus from FFX, you really need to re-think your character (not saying that is your case, just an example).

Go ahead and use game rips. Nobody cares about the legality of it if you're not selling the game.

The Chrono Trigger remake was hardly a crappy little RPGMaker game. And it didn't use resources- it was the game itself that was being replicated. It's not exactly a parallel here.

Besides, it didn't get "shut down"-- they may have been able to win in court. They chose to shut down to avoid court fees.

Assuming you're in the USA, it's certainly possible that this is legal. Look up fair use-- title 17 section 107 of the US Code. If it's non-commercial, parodical/satirical, and doesn't take away from the market of the original game... be willing to bet you the courts would find in your favor.

No they wouldn't, if something belongs to me and someone else uses it then it is theft, same thing applies to game companies and their resources, it's illegal and no court would rule in your favour.
That being said there's no way in hell you'll get caught so just do it anyway.

What bojjencion just said is stupid, dont do that. You can't add a few pixels here and there and call something your own; its plagarism. That's why a lot of great spriters/artists here have either shut down their sites or quit.
Heed Seph's (the actual one, the green blue one) advice, but take it with a grain of salt.
It might just be illegal, but i doubt you'll get caught...

Just my 2 cents.
