Can anyone give me a simple example of how to use the File.open code?

I'm not entirely sure of the syntax when using the File object type. if i could get an example of how to use the File.open(filename, method) code, and the the readlines([rs]) code, and the write(str) code, it would be really helpful. just a simple method that uses these codes would suffice.
