Its not the best yet, but I'm still getting a hang of the shading process on these little guys.

What do I need to focus on here?

Its not got hair YET... I really don't know how to add hair to the halflings >.< So can someone explain how to shade out hair and stuff? I can make the outlining, i just can't fill it in to look... 'cool'. XD

Thanks. :)

for the hair you should read "Hair" (by tana) 4th post
http://www.rmxp.org/forums/http://dev.r ... 06#p216206

for the rest of your sprite:
1 don't use pure blacks.
2 use some of the palettes by WalkingAbomination, because you seem to have trouble picking your own colors.
3 choose your lightsource! (for the shades and highlights) If I'm correct it's almost topdown in the halfling sprites *correct me if I'm wrong WA*

some help:
to the left is my work in progress, the one on the right is yours.. I hope this helps :)

Edit:don't mind the outline for the coat.. it was just a quicky

Nothing to add, looks like Gr got it.
But i'll make a scalp marker to help out a bit with hair ^^.
You can use my colors no problem, i'm sure you can even use anyones colors actually, if you mention whose you are using i'm sure they would not care at all.

E-For lighting and shadows it's pretty much the same as the RMXP rtp and the rest of the temps with this angle yeah :)

Heres a new version... With hair. Well, 2 versions. The one on the right is supposed to have a 'heavy-coat' like collar coming out of the blue coat, but I couldn't get it quite right...

I recolored the jacket with Raven's palette. Which looks best?
Please, please use the imgzoom tags. Thanks bunches. ~Gratheo

Double, I know...
EDIT *new image*
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/9343 ... ip3yu6.png[/imgzoom] *erased the belt... need help one that T_T its supposed to be 'fat', like a sash.*
(I dunno how to img zoom :P)
The one on the far left is my new one, the middle is the old one, and the far right is yours.
Thanks for the hair, I ripped it XD And I used the palette to recolor the jacket.
I was aiming for more of a 'drench coat' coat, and less a tunic. :)
Thanks much!

Any more C&C before I start working on frames?

Looking much better now man :), what you need to do now is lighten that dark color on the pants a bit because with the dark coat outline it looks bad (too many darks mashed together), btw that dark outline is good for only the outline most of the time, once you begin working within lighten it up some because it will clash too much with the lighter and/or darker colors, same thing goes when working with darks.
You have to be able to tell your shades apart at least pretty well, if they are too similar your picture ends up looking all.. muddy.

Now when working with clothes start out very simple and with a base color for that piece, get your outline just the way you want it then begin working on details and shading like extra parts, torn pieces, and different colored parts.
Think of the shape of the clothing and how it hangs on the body, keep the "creases", clothes seams simple if you're working with smaller characters.

With color and smaller characters for the most part you need to have more contrast than on a bigger sprites rememeber that.

Also rememeber that hair that hangs over the forehead casts a shadow, so at least add a slightly darker shade where you think the light does not hit.

Here's a quick example of some of the things i mentioned.
Image has zoom

I hope this helps a bit man, and if i'm wrong on something i hope someone will correct me.

To add zoom to an image just paste the image code and type in zoom after img :)

this is something more people should read..because adding too little contrast is the biggest mistake most people make

ohw and I also forgot to add a cast shadow beneath the bangs
