Burn marks above doors

Ok so when I moved into this flat there was a burn mark on the door frame, right above the door, like someone had held a candle there. I didn't think much of it; washed off with soapy water anyway.

A few weeks ago I walk back to my flat, and I see the same mark has appeared above the front door. (Shared accomodation) Things getting a little weird;

Anyway now I've noticed the same mark above two other doors has suddenly appeared.


I'm wondering if I'm going mad, if there's any significance to this sort of marking?, or if it's just my dorm manager';s way of identifying something (I can't ask, they're never there)

Like just wondering if there's a cultural significance or anything like that to burning the top of doors.

hide a videocamera somewhere and try to film it? No idea what it could be, are you sure they are burn marks though?

well, it's thick black and smudges, idk. It goes all the way through the doorway too so I dunno what else it can be. And it's not very precisely done.

I agree with Grav... Setup a webcam to take a picture every 15 minutes and try to narrow down a time to when it occurs. See if it is someone.. or something! that does it.

Are you sure it isn't friction? If the doors are rubbing against the frame then you probably have your answer.

Maybe your flat is haunted :boo: !!! Or, maybe somebody is just messing with you. Whatever it is it's probably a good idea to figure out what's causing it because if you got demons in your place you're going to want to get out quick!

I thought maybe the flat had had a serious fire in the past and it was left behind uncleaned, but they've been appearing in other flats now. Well, two front doors.

lol, nice.

Still though, setup something to take some pictures for surveillance so that you can figure it out.

Sounds pretty mysterious, however my guess is on some kind of shady (or just not thoroughly tested) cleaning stuff being used... it just seems a tad more believeable than people with candles in their mohawks, or whatever people said XD
Alternatively, the doors' material's maybe black, the paint got washed off and the original color's coming through. Would also be a better explanation for other people's flats showing the same symptoms, and a better reason for the house owner to pay for it.

All of that being said - watching the webcam footage might still be an interesting thing to do, because whatever happens to the door - if it's clean to begin with and later looks like burn marks, it's gonna look awesome in the process!

It's really hard to tell without a picture... If it's black it could be mold growing which definitely needs your landlord's attention because there could be a possibility of a leaky pipe that's running through the walls or something. It also could be rust if it's more of a brown/red color from something similar as well. You could try cleaning it again and see if it happens over and over. You could also tell if it happens when it's just you there if the other person is never around when you are. That might narrow it down.
