Build & Win Contest: HYPE! MARKET! ADVERTISE!

I've seen a trickle of advertising thus far, but we're looking for a DELUGE! We're at Week 3 today, and the coming days should be when your marketing really picks up steam! HYPE!

Here's one method:

Share your signature images & links here!

Here's an easy way to make one right now!

If you post a small signature bar here (dimensions: 350px x 19px), I'll add it to my signature. The other staffers here are urged to do so, as well.

(Here's the code I use for my signature: You can copy it directly, if you want! -- I'll try to keep it updated as people add their userbars.)

Update your signature, right away!!: http://www.arpgmaker.com/ucp.php?i=profile&mode=signature

Other tips on adding to your marketing "appeal":

+ Beautify your game's thread.
Make it look visually appealing. Important screenshots shouldn't be spoilered. Your logo should be front-and-center. It should be REALLY EASY to instantly find a link to your game/demo, and the instructions on how to play (key bindings, etc.) should be just as obvious to the eye.
Sections, like "story", "characters", etc., should have headers, which are bold and large and easy to identify. Don't be afraid of BBCodes!
You can add a background to your thread's first page by using the code: [ bgall=#fff]http://url.com/image.png[/bgall]
Don't forget! SPELL + GRAMMAR CHECK!!

+ Beautify your game's HTML page!
When you export your game, it's contained within an HTML page. Did you know that you can modify that?
It's true! You can add a pretty wrapper to it, or images, or anything else you can add in any other HTML page.
A game with a modified HTML page (so long as it doesn't really negatively affect load time or obscure the game itself) will look much more impressive than a game that's just on the basic, pre-exported page, with the black background and lack of info.
You don't have to go overboard -- but remember that this can be a method of reminding players of control schemes, update information, or other useful stuff!

+ Make a YouTube demo and post it in your thread.
CamStudio is free -- Use it to capture a video of your game. Add it to your thread using [ youtube ] tags (do not include anything after "&" in the URL).

+ Start a link share.
Offer to advertise other peoples' entries' links in your signature, if they return the favor!

+ Post!
If you have an advertisement in your signature, and you post around the forum, people will notice! The judges in particular are trying to be aware of and notice peoples' ad links. We'll notice it that much more if you post!

+ View counts matter (a little)!
Have you been waiting on posting a thread? Don't! "View Count" of your thread will minorly factor into how we assess your marketing success.
(Post count will not matter, so don't spam, and don't waste your time with trying to falsely inflate your view count -- it will be a very minor factor).

+ Social Networking!
Our facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/HBGames -- Post a link to your game on our wall!
You can also make your own facebook page only for your game: Post a link to it in your thread, or in your signature, so people can 'like' it!
You can also make a Twitter feed for your game and link to it, or link to another Twitter feed that you use to post about updates you make!
There are lots of other social networking options, too. If you have a social networking page anywhere on the net, don't be afraid to whore it up.

+ Gimmicks -- Be Creative!
Does your game use points, or have a leaderboard?
Post a challenge in your thread to see if people can best each others' scores.
You can make challenges to find Easter Eggs and have people post screenshots of their finding it.
You can make forum-only events that involve people naming your heroes or making captions for screenshots or defacing your mascots.
It doesn't matter. Marketing is shameless!

Need help?
If you're not sure if your game is being marketed well enough, ask here. We can give pointers on how your thread's appeal can be improved.

Get hyping!

Awesome Bro

I'd say I'm doing pretty well so far, got a userbar for my game that links to my project thread, and I post a lot around the forum so my signature is seen by lots of people... I'll also be having "audience participation" with the screenshots, I'll be wanting people to post screenshots of the game meeting certain requirements, although I haven't seen anyone else use it yet, lol. I'm also currently in talks with RadethDart about the title logo, he's made a really nice design for it but I've just requested a few changes to it, hopefully he'll get back to me within a few days and I'll be able to show it off.

Here's my userbar for people (And mods) to use:
Code:
[url=http://www.arpgmaker.com/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=76293][img][url=http://bb]http://bb[/url].ohsk.net/uploads/ProjectGRID%20UB.png[/img][/url]

I will make everyone a deal. If you create a userbar for your game, I will post all of them on my website and in my sig bar just for you (with permission of course)!

Jason

Awesome Bro

Yay lol :P I'll be doing the same actually, sounds like a good deal, we should be sharing other peoples games too, that way we don't look selfish... after all, sharing is caring, right?

That's the spirit! I updated the OP with the code in my own signature. If you're feeling a little lazy but want to support the contest without creating a signature on your own, feel free to copy mine.

And look, here's a link to where you can update your sig, right now, no extra clicks needed!: ucp.php?i=profile&mode=signature

All the work's done for you! How easy is that.

(Don't forget to keep it updated as more userbars are added here!)

Stupid question here because I'm new to this, but what is the standard size for a "userbar" to advertise my game with? Just so I can think ahead without having to redesign it later on because it's too big/small...

Just edit the index.html that you exports out of. Not sure if you can edit it with a visual editor like Dreamweaver, but as an alternative you can make a separate webpage in Dreamweaver, then copy paste the HTML for it into your game's index.html to merge both together. That is if you're not comfortable with typing your own html.

350px x 19px is the "standard" size for a small userbar.
You can make one that's any size you want, but if you want me to advertise it in my signature, post a 350px x 19px one :)

Um, do you happen to know of a free visual editor, by any chance?
Amaya or Aptana Studio

or Notepad++, if you're comfy with writing your own HTML by code alone :P

Awesome Bro

Hmm, well with these new revised rules, I reckon that if I can get everything finished by the deadline, I'll end up with more than half the marks lol, not sure where that would put me, but I'm pretty confident that I'll atleast be in the top 12...

Well, here's my current userbar:
Code:
[url=http://www.arpgmaker.com/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=76293][img][url=http://img201]http://img201[/url].imageshack.us/img201/2443/ubda6352n.gif[/img][/url]

I might change it later on though, if people suggest for it to be changed (if it doesn't fit the theme of the game or something) once more progress has been shown off in my thread.

Speaking of threads, I've remade my thread to look more presentable and organized. You could, you know, look at it or something if you want.

Awesome Bro

Let's see if this works first:

Code:
[url=http://www.arpgmaker.com/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=76250][img][url=http://img209]http://img209[/url].imageshack.us/img209/9435/lolkn.gif[/img][/url]

Well it seems to work in my sig...

Hey guys! Here's my new tiny banner for my game. Let's trade banners to place in our sigs! Place my banner in your sig, and I'll place your banner in my sig! :D Let's help each other promote our games! :D Just send me a pm so I know who to add! :)

A sample of my tiny banner can be seen in my sig! :)

Hey thanks for adding my userbar in your sig AeroLowe! :D Ima put your one in my sig too :) Btw I accidentally had the
Code:
 tags in on my previous post ^^;

Ven, here's my userbar. I'll get around to facebook and such tomorrow.

[url=http://www.arpgmaker.com/viewtopic.php?f=293&t=76327][img]http://www.beatthelist.com/REDBar.png[/img][/url]

Anyway, how's my thread look? Anything you think it could use? Anything it could lose?

Also, guys, if anyone wants me to throw their userbar in my sig, post a screen of your COIN count in my thread. If you beat the last top count (the two players COIN scores get combined), then I'll throw your userbar in my sig. I'm going into my profile settings right now to take out the script links, so that I can do so.

Hey guys, it's awesome to advertise for the contest, but some of your signatures are getting REALLY vertically tall.

Signatures shouldn't be any taller than 150 pixels on a 1900x1200 resolution.

Use [float ] tags, like I do in my signature, to align things horizontally.
The exact code for my sig is in the original post for reference, and I keep it updated :)

(You don't have to copy it directly, but you do need to make your signatures less tall!)

As a judge, I'd give you a 3 out of 4 at the moment in Marketing.

The thread could still use a little more "pizzazz". More theming; it needs to "stand out" from other threads and look unique. Perhaps a Youtube video, or a little social networking.
Do those things (don't forget your game's html) and you could pull a 4.
