History of Outlaw City

Outlaw City wasn't always called by that name, it was previously known as Generation City, a city outside of the reach of foreign policy and law.

The short but powerful history of this city was forged during the beginning of the Energy Depression, when Generation Corporation promised the impossible; nearly infinite, cheap energy. With only two strings attached.

Although disbelieved at first, Gen. Corp proved their claims and were granted their concessions by the world governments:

First, the funding to create their endless supply of power, the Infinity Generators.
And secondly, land and complete sovereignty.

And so Generation City was formed next to the four gigantic Infinity Generators that fed the energy needs of the world for years.

Still afraid of another budding energy crisis, and given breathing room, countries frantically developed other forms of energy; thermal, advanced solar, large hydroelectric plants, and other forms advanced and soon were enough by themselves.

Their timing was perfect as the next year a huge and impenetrable domed barrier formed around the generators, cutting the power flow out to miniscule levels.

Without the interest of the world at stake, Generation City fell into a lull, and it's only other product, freedom from world laws, became it's primarly sales point.

For several years, Generation City became a place of crime and crusades, black markets and money lenders flocked and many transactions were performed within the city. Things were going poorly, and as history had shown, downward trends had a nasty habit of continuing.

The shield that had blocked access to the Infinity Generators had been leaking a strange radiation, one which began to affect the citizen. Nearly unnoticable at first, things began to speed up, and soon citizens found themselves changed.

The changes were not always disfiguring, and they were usually not even negative. People soon found themselves possessing increased physical attributes, and some found themselves able to control the elements or use powers not unlike those of comic-book superheroes.

Current Day

There are four main "factions" to Outlaw City:

City Hall/The Knights:
With the increase in physical abilities and reaction speed the most common of changes, most such cases flock to the banner of the Knights.
Formed just before a citizen riot that took out the original City Hall, the Knights are just that, an archaic group that tries to emulate the legends of old through Chivalry, Strength, Honor, and wearing a large amount of metal.
While the largest and most prominent faction, the Knights are held in low esteem for their direct nature.

Generation Corp:
The company that began it all, and original the founders of City Hall and the government, Generation Corp, or Gen Corp for short, are the suppliers of energy to the city.
Due to their own overabundance of energy, Gen Corp develops a large amount of high end technology, including potentially illegal weaponry thanks to their immunity to world laws.
Potentially one of the most powerful of the groups, Gen Corp is ruthless and deals with their foes through the most expedient means.

The Arcanum:
Like the Knights, this group has reverted to older ways. However, their aim is more along the lines of the mystical and mysterious.
The people changed to hold true powers instead of increased abilities, especially those with powers that are more magical-seeming in nature, are members of the Arcanum.
Led by a powerful Sorceress who seems to have extraordinary control over her powers, the Arcanum operates out of Altham Park and are secretive and powerful.

Shadow Caste:
Not much is known about the Shadow Caste. They operate secretly and few can more than guess which, if any, acts they perform.
Membership in the Caste is much like the Caste themselves, a mystery.

Characters

Sahra Vintage
http://anamei.net/files/images/outlawcity/sahra.png[/img]
The antagonist of this story, more or less, Sahra's history is less shady than it might seem, although her future more murky.

Mistress Mystic
http://anamei.net/files/images/outlawcity/mystic.png[/img]
Her memory erased after an escape from Gen Corp, Mystic seems to be more the antagonist than Sahra, although it always seems to be Sahra that bears the brunt of the troubles caused.

DOWNLOAD the GAME! (6MB)

Outlaw City: Dark Past centers on the earlier adventures and history of one of Outlaw City's main characters. A game created from scratch within 2 weeks, OCDP is more of a mini-episode, lasting only 1 full hour of playtime but featuring a custom battle system and other features.

Disclaimer: This game was created for Sandgolem's 2-Week Game Contest. It was started on the first day of the contest and done before the end. That's 1 hour of total play time with some custom art, custom titlescreen, and custom battle system with new features all done in within 2 weeks. It has not be revised after, although there are potential thoughts in that direction. If there are small inconsisitencies or issues, please remember that we didn't have a full development window to complete this in. Thanks~

Thanks, I noticed it when reviewing after posting, I never click links when Previewing (lost a post that way before).

Now that your internet is back up, you reply really, really fast.

First, I had no idea what Shadowrun is (up until the time of your post).

Secondly, after looking it up (I'm assuming it's this, which I found using Google: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_Run) then I suggest you wait until you've played the game instead of reading the "back of the box" and assuming you understand the whole story.

Ignorance and blind assumptions are common symptoms for a few web-diseases I know, you might want to get that checked on.

And getting overly defensive is the first sign of guilt. Everyone rips off shadowrun, even if they're not aware of it. You were inspired by something that was inspired by Shadowrun, nothing wrong with that. It was a complement, I enjoy this brand of story arc. Just dont fool yourself into thinking it hasnt been done a dozen times before.

Yes, one of the most intelligent assumptions I have seen to date. Shit I ripped off Shadow Run and I don't even know what the hell it is...WE ALL rip off of Shadow Run because we are completely oblivious that Shadow Run is the game to end all games...it is a compilation of EVERYTHING.

Jesus christ ryanwh, think before you post such bullshit.

EDIT: Also since our good friend has reported this thread for review, may I point out that under general assumptions made by the above poster...it has sent this thread into something it was not intended. Before making an accusation, he should look into a game review, storyline...ect...before posting complete nonsense. These type of things would no happen if only a person would shut their fucking trap and not prove supreme ignorance amongst .org's members.

You guys can throw a fit or comment on the game. I for one am looking forward to the release. Im not gonna explain myself to a bunch of baiters looking for a fight.

Or perhaps someone posted something completely irrelevant to the thread in a new project post, which was both offensive and slanderous, with no actual proof other than a vague back history outline and a bag full of assumptions.

And being defensive if the first reaction a human usually has when being attacked; when dust blows into your eyes, you blink in defense, when a person tries to hit you, you duck or bring up your arms.

I can take either ignorance or offensiveness in a post, but I don't feel I should have to put up with both, especially unprovoked.

What a diva. I leave you to your wonderous art then, since you obviously cant handle anything short of a reacharound without calling it "slander". You shouldnt post in a forum if you cant handle dessenting opinions without blowing it out of proportion. Its infantile, deal with it like an adult. My reaction was provoked by a story element you used resembling, or being almost identical, to Shadowrun. But its a fact, so this wasnt some personal unprovoked attack, it was provoked by very specific similiarities and amplfied by your childish histrianic reaction. Deal with that.

Alright now, now I must make a productive post in lieu of said events.

I completely agree with Tdata and Des with their statements. This game looks bad arse mate. It kind of brings in some type of medieval/modern goth vibe that I simply think \m/

Best of luck with this, and I'm looking forward to giving it a go when it's released for BT. :)

Cheers

Anyway. Anaryu, this game looks beautiful. And I love the gothly, dark characters ^^ (especially the black android-cyborg). I agree with Despain, I hope you win :D.

This will be my final post regarding this, as I would like to clarify that what you wrote was:

Shadowrun ripoff

You did not say "The story resembles" or even "is exactly the same as" you said "ripoff" which is an offensive term that hints strongly at idea theft or copying said quote, not that it's similar, but that I was AWARE of the other product AND that I actively STOLE the idea.

You call your quote an "opinion" but an opinion is not stated as a direct fact; if you do not want people to misconstrue your post, please be more careful with your language.

After reading a little about Shadowrun I can admit there is some similarities (much as there are similarites between my story and Ghost in a Shell, or any super-hero comic, for that matter) but I would not term it a "ripoff."

Fine, let me ask you something. Is every rpg a rip of Dragon Warrior, Fire Emblem & Legend of Zelda? No. Similar, yes. upon reading up on the game you mentioned, I find similarities, yes. There arn't many Space-Age RPGs out there. So, you don't have much standardization. I find the two games similar, but not the same.

About 40% of the new novels are actually new. The rest have had thier serial numbers filed off and a few details changed. Yet they sale just the same. Her game is one of the 40%. It is actully new.

To tell the truth, other than scoping the competition, why are you here? Point me to your topic for your entry so i can point to all the "ripping" you've done.

It really gets old when the same three or four people continuously and, apparently, deliberately try and bait other people into arguments for no better reason then they like to be jerks online.

Ryan, I don't see any more flaming in Wings post than I've seen in many of yours. Or many others by other posters that I rarely do more than just ask people to be polite.

People, is it really that hard to be civil to each other? I feel like the only adult in a Lord of the Flies daycare most days.

Ontopic: Anaryu, this looks great, I was afraid, given the lack of visible activity, that many/most had dropped out of BT. I'm looking forward to your entry.

Maybe we should seperate the projects that want honest opinions and ones that just yearn for some flattery and acceptance, Im not going to apologize for pointing something out to a fragile ego and I shouldnt have to, but I do here which is why nobody comes here anymore.
