Blood of Bahamut/Nanashi no Game

News is REALLY limited on this one, but it looks fantastic. Just announced yesterday by Square-Enix. Read this. It has all the information you could get. The game is for the DS and is called Blood of Bahamut. The premise looks cool and I think Square is finally starting to realize their standard premises are getting old.

The horror/book held DS game is better imo.

EDIT: Nanashi no Game

Everything else coming out by them seems to be the same derivative crap (story-wise) with slightly tweaked action-rpg mechanics.

Screw it, I'm hijacking this thread in the name of the Ixian pirates!!

YARR!!!

Square has decided to play with the concept of the RPG tropes that they themselves created, in a horror deconstructionist manner, and I think that should be applauded. Not only is it their first horror game (Parasite Eve hardly counts as anything near scary), but it's also the first non-RPG thing they've attempted since those flight sims all those years ago.

I should also state that I'm so goddamn sick and tired of their RPGs. I, and several other folks I know used to enjoy Square games, but now we're all waiting for them to die... At least until this game was announced.

Fuck FFXIII's retarded flipper children spin-off games that only have tangental ties to the original.
That PSP fighting game I could care less about.
No one's going to buy their new KH games except fangirls who've run their rabbits dry rubbing to Naruto yaoi.
And Bahamut Blood... Don't know enough about it to have a reason to hate it, but goddamnit I'll find one.

Nanashi no Game is really what they should be supporting, and more games like it. But I guess some folks at SE don't like change.

That actually looks really cool. I hope it gets its Western release; I've had blue balls as far as video games are concerned ever since I lost my copy of Hotel Dusk. It has kind of a Yume Nikki vibe to it -- even the music sounds like the 8-bit pieces. I'm pipe-dreaming that the developers were fans and hoping for an Uboa analogue.

Regarding Blood of Bahamut, the premise sounds interesting, but there's not enough information past that to really pique my interest. Unless the premise is really amazing, it's the gameplay and execution that gets me, so I'm gonna hold out until we see some of that.

they have the same sort of wave voice running the background and the same sort of repetition and all that. yeah, that's just because that's probably one of the more effective ways to get a certain kind of atmosphere across with chiptunes, but it's still neat.

It's a horror game about a 2d RPG that's haunted and kills people 7 days after playing. Kinda like the Ring meets a JRPG.

for Square, that's incredibly original. if it comes out in north america, I expect everyone on this forum to buy a copy just so that we can encourage Square to start being bold again with their projects.

Wait, what? Square's making a game that isn't a shitty RPG that's basically the same game they've been making for about a decade(and im not even counting the games that are the same games!)?! Remarkable. I can't say that I've been excited about any SE games lately, except for Dragon Quest IX that is(not counting Chrono Trigger, and Dragon Quest IV, because I already liked those), but NnG is definitely something I could get fired up about. That is, if they bother to release the damned thing in NA.

Unless the game is way too Japano-centric for western audiences, I see no reason why they should refrain from bringing it over here. In fact, being Japano-centric probably wouldn't hinder their sales much, if at all. Does it even specifically take place in Japan? Probably, but it doesn't matter, as long as it isn't filled to the brim with japfag-orgasm-inducing-Jpop shit and the like(that's like, one of the main reason I didn't pick up The World Ends With You).

I'd take this over the next FF, Kingdom Hearts, or game that's not in either of those franchises, but might as well be since it's basically the same thing, any day.

It seems like it's pretty japanese, but in a day-to-day-life sense (i.e. you go to school and people have uniforms what's up with that??? and everyone lives in apartments wow where's the houses people!) rather than COMPLETE JAPANESE CULTURAL IMMERSION. Your basic Miyazaki film is more immersed in japanese culture than this seems to be and they've done well over here, so I don't think it'd be that much of a sales deterrent.

Then again, nintendo's been really stupid lately as localization goes (hi releasing that shitfest Magical Starsign and taking the poor reception as an indication that Mother 3 would not do well in north america because they're both by brownie brown) so we'll have to wait and see.

I thought it was something like that. It's not like American audiences are completely adverse to playing as a foreigner! As long as they aren't middle-easternLOL!(referring to the U.S. here of course)

it's cute how you're still mad about that :3

The reason it won't come here is because it's a game people would actually buy, by SE that doesn't involve emo anime kids saving the world. SE only printed 300,000 some-odd copies, and they aren't printing more so they can make it seem like the game didn't sell well.

I mean, if they actually put out an innovative and fun game then they might have to use... effort in future games. And who needs that kinda stress?

I'm still taking the fact that it's "under consideration" (or whatever) for an NA release as a good sign. CINQ games have been getting pretty good reception here too (I think) so it'd be a really poor choice from an economic standpoint.

Then again, hey, video game companies are stupid. I definitely wouldn't put it past them, sad as that'd make me.
