Birds Project - actionman

Birds Project

It's really just an outline of what it's going to be - I have no scanned pics yet, and most of the ideas are in my head, but here goes nothing:
I recently gave up my RPGMaker project out of boredom, and my inability to complete anything big. So I decided I wanted to make something easy and small. Well, easy and small once I get past the programming.
I'm making it in GM8 - a program I have no experience in, so we'll see how this works out.

My game concept:
You control a small flock of birds as they try to roll a ball through a 2D sidescrolling platformer to the finish.
There are some other random annoyances, such as monsters, closed passages, and gaps)
The main idea is number strategy. How many birds are you going to set on your ball to pull it/protect it, and how many will you leave to fix up the annoyances. It gets harder later on when you have more things that require seperate groups of your flock to hold it, while a few pull, and a few get the annoyances, for example:
You have 10 birds collected in this level thus far. To cross a bridge, you need two birds to hold the watergate closed so the bridge isn't underwater. You then have 8 birds left; you set 2 on the ball so it rolls a bit faster than 1 bird pulling, and you have 6 birds to attack any monsters.

Some things birds can do are:
-Break small rocks holding up large rocks, so as to break the large rock.
-Pick up the ball in a net and carry it for a few seconds.
-Fly some materials to make a bridge out of, and drop them to cover a gap.

My intention was to create something creative, never done before, yet built on a simple concept.
The art style is going to be simplistic, and possibly something like a Boy and his Blob style.

I've already started some coding - which I really need help with. If someone could help me out getting the basic coding for ball physics and birds, that would be awesome. viewtopic.php?p=805308#p805308

That's it for now.
What do you think? I'm looking for some constructive crit on the concept, and maybe some ideas.
All input is welcome,

Just real quick sketch of the idea I have in mind. The controls are the arrow for selecting birds (adding them to rocks and such) and the cancel-sign showing there are no tools picked up. The current mode is Selection mode, so some balloon-messages show the number of birds in different jobs..

As you can see I got bored with the grass after a while, and the trees are really sketchy, so you could say it's not finished.
But it's a good idea of what it's going to be like. Maybe a bit bigger size so you can see more of the course.

I guess that might be true. And having it as a flash game might reach a larger audience... Heck, maybe even HTML5 - though that would take quite a bit more work.
And thanks.
I'll look into Flash and see what they have for physics

Awesome Bro

Very interesting concept. Definitely something I haven't seen before.

Though when I read it, I thought of the game being played out in a much flatter, overhead view. Something like Advance Wars. With all of the features you have in mind, a larger view of the map will definitely be a necessity.

Good luck, and let me know if you need a tester!
