Bastian Sky graphics :: By Shawn Deprey

I was working on an MMORPG called Bastian Sky a few years ago. You may or may not have heard of it, but I was the pixel artist/graphics designer for the game. I ended up will a fist full of custom Steampunk graphics and a team that fell apart lol. I figure I may as well share them. I dont mind if you use them just PLEASE be sure to 1: Give me full credit in your game for the graphics and 2: Post here what you think of them. Tell me what you think either way I would like some feedback on them.

I made these in Photoplus 6 using layers and opacity and smudge effects. Perhaps some others to but I forget.

As you can see we were pretty serious and worked for a while on this. There are some more graphics for things like grass and mountains. I think I have some chara sets to. If anybody is interested in seeing them just ask. So what yah think?

Hmm, these are really inconsistant. It's a mix of graphic stuff and pixel art, and it really doesn't mix together at all well. The shading is dodgy, you could do with more contrast, and I don't know what is with the tree/bushes at the start, that look like they've been done in paint, nor the photographs of trees in the tileset half way down, nor the smudged paint style version of the RTP trees. One thing. Smudging and graphics like this aren't pixel art. I don't mean to be harsh, but go and look at some tutorials.

mm. I was going for a certain style. It looked really good when all put together. Very cartoony. Except for those more realistic looking trees. We were originally going for a realistic type of graphics, where we would shrink down real objects a then make them usable in VBGORE. But when I came up with that Steam engine Train, we decided to move to cartoony graphics.

As for the inconsistency, the only thing I see out of place are the realistic shrunk down trees, and as I said we changed graphics style after that.

You are right about the shading though. these were made in my wee stages of pixel art and graphics design. I barely knew how to use the smudge tool correctly :P. Let alone shading. The reason I did use the smudge tool though, and not stick with just straight pixel art, was because it gave the graphics a smooth cartoony look.
