Asian MMORPGs

Say, I wonder what's so good about Asian MMORPGs, Western still beats them.
Don't you guys think that Asian MMORPGs give you a "just another MMORPG" feeling?

All of them involves simply killing monsters 24/7. And similiar "features" that I would mostly call "common features".

So... do you like or dislike Asian MMORPGs? For me, I play for a while, and quit because of:

-Inconsistent Updates
-Ridiculous Staff
-Grinding
-Bad community

Does it really matter if it's a "Western" or an "Asian" mmorpg? Can't it just be "good mmorpgs do this and bad ones don't"? And give examples of both, all I can think of is Ragnarok and another one I once frequented, and I'm fairly certain they're both Asian-made, but I didn't notice anything like what you said when I played (except that Ragnarok sucked my computer's ability dry...) It's the "western" ones that I've noticed generally suck.

Regardless, can you give us, say, more than three examples of each and what was wrong or right with each of them? It sounds like you played one "Asian" mmo and decided that all of them are like that.

Agreed.
It really doesn't matter whether something has an Asian theme, or not.
I mean, I had ridiculous fun with Guild Wars: Factions, for example. That had an Asian theme, but was the opposite OP described.

Why is it people try to find whatever they can label as an "Asian ______" and then put anything Asian themed into the criteria of being something so forbidden and evil? I mean, that's just racist....
Judge a game by the game itself. Not by the theme it follows :specs:

Well, I live in Asia, so...

obviously I have played A BUNCH of Asian games.

Gosh I'm sick of them...
I mean... yes THERE IS GOOD ASIAN GAMES.

But...

Most of them are just grinding games.

Examples: ( Many of you may not know these games cause some of them are only in a few countries )

1. MapleStory (No, I can kill myself in this game )
2. Mo Siang ( Most of you don't know )
3. Many more... ( I think, looking at my record, I have played about 30 asian games )

And I'm not generally talking about the "Theme"

I'm talking about Asian-made games.

Guild Wars may be good ( Never played it, meh ) but many still suck.

stop talking now

justin, in my experience every mmorpg is like that. there's never much to the gameplay aside from killing endless streams of things. some are particularly grueling (maplestory oh god maplestory) but the general formula never really changes regardless of the creators. there's definitely a spectrum of quality there, but I never really matched either side with one specific region.

then again I haven't played very many mmorpgs and I've never played anything for very long, so idk

I guess its the reason most MMORPGS are the same is because they make the game with the same premise. While RPGS have Many subcategories. MMORPGS have mainly 2 subcategories: Normal and special.
Most Popular MMORGPs fall in between these two.
T.T they try to set themselves apart by pretending to be different.
Examples: Flyff(You can fly), Maplestory(2d platformer).
They have the same basic game system though.
Battles based on stats with skills not necessary and long amounts of grinding
Then there are MMOFPS and Action MMOs which have battle systems that vary
but have no true community and 0 exploration and the basic goal is to buy stuff or become higher ranked
Honestly I prefer f2p mmos since I'm a casual gamer.

Asian MMORPG Are the best type of mmorpgs that exist in my opinion

Like Cabal Online
or the two upcomming games i cant wait for
Blade and Soul Online ( when i saw this game First time i thought thats no MMORPG the graphics are too good but you know asian people can make the most things look easy )
Blade and soul MMORPG Comming 2010
Trailer if anyone is intrested to check it out : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtA1jSreK84
no boring grindings in this game looks awsome it looks but who knows

Blade and Soul is a Next Gen MMORPG FOR PC And Maybe PS3

Tera Online
What can i say the asian's has done it again
Trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5R4X_0R-C4
no targeting sounds fun and hard

Well for me Asian MMORPG Cant be beaten by anything
only my opinion

well those two games really is different from many other MMORPG
It makes you think that MMORPG Games are in league with one player games such as DMC Series

for those wondering those games will probably be P2P ( I dont mind il play them cause they look awsome) Blade and soul's skills looks so dynamic i still cant belive its an MMORPG.

for all those wondering 2 that Blade and Soul Trailer was a ingameplay trailer 1 second of that trailer was not ingame, the rest was ingame as hell the start was 2 Gms beating eachother up.

i wish i could write more in this section but il make a thread for those intrested in those two games
where all the info is.

Any mmorpg with an action based battle system(YOU KNOW WHERE YOU CAN USE CONTROLS and CONTROL YOUR FIGHTS)
and has a true world community, and is not a grind fest but has some actual background
That is what my dream mmo is :thumb:
See I know what I want lol

I've played a few MMOs out of Korea and China and generally I find them to be disappointing in one regard or another. The best one to date is Runes of Magic but even that has a lot of things that irk me.

There's not much to say about MMORPG's in general. No matter how you look at them, they're all the same in essence- pick a class, kill and loot ad nauseum, wag e-penis around. Asian MMO's gain a particularly bad rep because companies practically crank out like two or three at a time in a month (Not an actual statistic, but you get what I mean). Companies from other regions tend to be more cautious with these things, so there's less of stuff from there to criticize.

FFXI is, by your definition (where it was produced), is an asian MMORPG. I haven't played it myself, but from what I see development-wise, it stands almost toe-to-toe with World of Warcraft, which is ironically the very same "same old" concept: pick a class, grind, PVP, plus a few shiny additions.

Personally, I can no longer stand the perpetual grinding. I prefer playing more "casual" online games now like Audition Online, or O2Jam. In a broader view, there is more variety to online gaming than RPG's. If you're tired of the whole grindfest, try something else.

Considering everyone seems to like Guild Wars, which is an NCSoft (Korea) game; not all asian MMORPG's are bad.

To be honest I haven't played many MMORPGs though so I wouldn't be able to comment too much.

Tibia sucked though. It seriously sucked.

God! Ever played KalOnline or Silk Road Online people? They're all the same. What kills me about these idiotic games is that THEY REQUIRE NO SKILL WHATSOEVER. To kill an enemy, you merely click on them and wait patiently whilst your character and the monster hits back and forth. Right. I could be playing skill-based RPGs like Oblivion or Mass Effect - why would I want to play a game where the battles have little interaction (apart from the occassional 'click' on the skills you want to use)? On the good side, the graphics are generally quite detailed in these Asian RPGs and they are - somewhat - better than RuneScape. Then again, that's not exactly hard is it?

MapleStory is the only Asian MMO i've played (and still play)
I think that's the only one....

MapleStory is pretty friggin awesome though
