Anatomy dump~

Im on a personal vendeta agianst myself to learn anatomy. So im starting with heads. Im using the book "Andrew Loomis - Drawing Heads And Hands" for reference. Skimming all the underlined parts I started to read and tried the first few examples. Got me angry cus i kept messing them up. But try try try i did.
Heres my first few tries.

I started to get the hang of it after the first like 11 tries and decided to practice a bit with different head movements. Like so, also messing around with noses and mouths.

A bit more practice and I should have it down. Thats my anatomy study, first chapter. Tell me what you think.

Excellent studies, great at proportions and faces. But it seems you have trouble placing the neck where it belongs. Last page third from left the neck is too far, but you prolly knew that, seeing how its fine in the pictures above.

Bravo!

i just got done with the chapter covering the head. I think i have got it down pretty well. Time to move on to the neck. |But first, I went to collage and i was bored out of my fucking skull with equasions and problem solving, I mean what the hell do I need calculus for anyway? I took out a piece of paper and started to draw....as I always do because thats what you do when you go to school, you draw. Came up with this, did it in pencil with all the meausrments n whatnot then went over it in pen.

I started the first chapter in Brune Hogarth's book. I was studying the torso and started the legs. This is what i came up with.
getting the concept of the wedge together. I cut myself with my exacto knife that I use to sharpen my graphite.... I think you can see the blood on the paper but whatever.:D

after that i tried to block in some muscle structure using the wedge structure.

just starting the legs here.

I've been forcing myself to do the same thing as you're doing with non-humans, and it's a pain sometimes to do studies (and I have half the talent so it's a b!tch for me :'P). What you have there is very accurate though, very nice.

I'd like to see some chicks, though. It's easy to get in a rut drawing one gender, and then you try to draw the opposite gender and they turn out looking mannish (or dudes look feminine, as is my problem at times).

yea, i was thinking bout what you said and i started to practice the female figure. I started off with a dynamic frame and worked my way up from that. After the first like 50 frame tries i could draw the figure with no problem.

Very nice.

Just the way I like my women, limbless with large breasts. :3

I need to get back into doing more studies myself, I've been doing so much flip book animation with plain contours that I think my own musculature has suffered.

Really awesome work here, it's nice to see some realistic work in the heap of half-assed anime of .org.

Indeed, though while realistic work is impressive (and very useful if you plan on using your artistic skills for big business like the video game industry), it kind of bores me, simply because it's real. That's just my personal preference.

Wow. O.o

And this all looks fantastic, badmonur. I wish I had half your talent (I can only do crappy anime/cartoon drawings; realism is just beyond me for some reason)

It may be boring in some senses, but it sort of gauges someone's skill. Mastery of realistic forms signifies an understanding of all art forms to a degree. No one can only draw in an anime style properly without first having experience with this type of work. Kind of like how you need to learn to keep balance before you can stand.

Yes @ Atnas. In art school that's why they teach you realism first; it primes you for doing the abstract and the more stylish, It's not that realism is easier--in fact, usually, it's harder--but without learning realism, doing the abstract and stylized stuff returns much crappier results.

And badmonur, nice chick. Her legs are really muscle-y (considering the "soft" appearance of the rest of her) but everything else seems right-on.

Very nice, but the muscles underneath the arms look over-exaggerated. Love the cross-hatching shading, looks very professional. Great work.

I don't study art nor I know Hogarth's work, but i did read Loomis and I think that he is a great choice if you want to make sure that you really learn to draw. I mean, expecially when we talk about the human figure, he gives you the exact hints that will allow you to sketch and draw figures without reference. Does Hogarth do the same? I was wondering why you switched author and you do not consider Loomis for the entire figure...

Moreover I like the style and the approach of Loomis in his books. It's not just do A, then do B, then C, everything has a reason... like someone says, he's the man.

I did switch to Mr.loomis's book. I got fed up with hogarth...
Its like he shows me stuff but dosent tell me how he does it. Like if a teacher puts a calculus equasion and solves it herself, then tells you, do you see why we used this way instead of another? Thats how i felt while reading his book. So i switched over to Andrew Loomis.
