Alice in Underground

Story
Alice, an ordinary little girl, was walking in the woods with her sister Ecila. While they were having lunch, Alice dropped a basket of apples. Afraid that her sister might be angry, she followed it deep down into the wood and accidentally fell into a mysterious hole. Little does she know that the hole will take her to the land she has never seen before. The land of Underground. Will she survive the Underground and get back to her world? Or will she become another toy of the cruel Queen Of Heart, the ruler of the Underground.


Characters

Alice
An ordinary girl in a strange world. She's just like the other thirteen year old girl so let's skip her and move on to someone more interesting.
Though this adventure to the Underground will surely make her more interesting.

Kathypillar
The lady who loves to do nothing but smoking on her favorite couch. She is the ruler of the talking flowers garden. She loathe those who enter her garden without permission, though she never give one anyway.

MadHatter
A crazy middle-aged man who is crazy about tea. He drinks tea instead of water and carry his personal tea pot everywhere he goes. If he is interested in anyone, he will do whatever it takes to get them to his tea party - dead or alive.

WhiteRabbit
A metro-sexual rabbit who is also a loyal servant of the Queen Of Heart. Anything that is not the
Queen's command will be regarded as time-wasting to him.

The Queen Of Heart
The ruler of the Underground. If she wants anything, she must have it - one way or another. Alice wanting to leave the Underground instead of becoming one of her citizen make she's upset, thinking that the Underground is the perfect place for anyone since it is ruled by her.

The Cheschire Cat
The mysterious cat whom Alice met when she first arrived the Underground. He seems to be interested in the Alice's apple, saying that he will help her because her apple taste so good. Cheschire Cat granted her power to transform herself at will, as well as a strength to fight her enemies. Though he promised Alice to help getting her back home, can she really believe him?

Gameplay
The game basically plays like your good old' beat'em up ( Final Fight, Golden Axe ). However, there are features that is not presented in the said game.

Two attack style
Alice can switch between two types of attack : Melee and Range attack. The players are required to utilize these two attacks appropriately depending on the enemies and the situation.

Tranformation
The Cheschire Cat granted Alice a magical power that allow her to transform herself for a short period of time. There are two types of tranformation, which are :
- Giant Transformation : Alice will be able to stand against almost any type of attacks, though she still take the damage. Her attack will also greatly increased and will knock back enemies.
- Dwarf Transformation : Alice's hitbox will become smaller , allowing her to dodge enemies attack easier. She will also move quicker and jump higher during the transformation. However, her defense and offense power will greatly decreased.

These two transformations will also comes into play when solving a puzzle during a battle or a boss fight.

If you really manage to pull of a beat em up, this is really impressive. The quirk that allows you to change size is something I haven't seen yet in a beat em up, but sounds like something that could work really well in enhancing the gameplay. If it was your idea to include such a feature in a beat em up, my hat off to you.
 
Thank you for all the comments, everyone! I hope I won't disappoint you all since this will be my first beat'em up and I'm sure there's a lot for me to learn X(

At first we were going to make this in 3D graphic but I'm new to 3D game programming as well. So, learning 3D AND learning Beat'em up in one month just seems impossible. Now it goes back to 2D graphic , which might suit the game better as well. The game will be something like Legend Of Kage 2, Muramasa - Demon Blade - or Odin Sphere.

I hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew :S I'm writing myown engine in C++ for this game. But if I mess up somehow then I'll probably move to GM7 <3

Thank you! I got the idea from the story of Alice in Wonderland itself. Since it seems like she has to go through the size changing quite often , might as well tie that into the gameplay :D
 
Testing Alice animation and movement. Since I have to deal with many exams and projects during this month, I'll be using Game Maker 7.0 for this.

I took the BG from Muramasa - Demon Blade as placeholders. Just want to test the scale of the character, as well as some background/foreground camera movement. :)

Holy shit this is gonna' be hard to beat... I quit !

It's looking really good, although the jumping bugs me, well, not the jumping itself, but when you attack during a jump, and stay at the exact same height, it'd look better if you were gradually falling while attacking in mid-air or something other than staying completely still.

Other than that... DAMN.

Yeah, I'm still deciding what should I do with that. The reason I did that because I want players to be able to perform air combo easier. I might change it to a fighting game style with gradually falling like you said.


I've updated the first post with Cheschire Cat :D He isn't a sketch but the actual pic that will be used in the game. Funny that he is the last one we designed, yet the first one to be in the game ( excluding Alice, of course . )
 
I love the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit, they are incredible, nice way to twist a story line. Good luck on this. I will keep my eye on this =)
