advice for making grass non square-ish

Try to have the colors relatively spread out evenly troughout the tile, or else it is bound to have a grid feel. In your example, vertically speaking, we can clearly see ThinDarker-Lighter-ThinDarker-Light...etc.

Speaking of Secret of Mana 3, you might take a look at part 5.1. That game demonstrates how extra tiles for simple things like grass, roads, etc, can really go the extra mile.
Yes thanks. That site has been helping me a lot for some time now, I just had a hard time making my grass pattern less obvious like they suggest.
