Actually know-it-all look at any encyclopedia site and they'll credit English language to England (shock). I'm well aware it's from a melting pot seeing as defined countries/borders weren't like they are now. The fact I know we have influences from French and North Western Europe is why I spell my words how they originated. Such as theatre. I'm pretty sure we were using it long before North America regardless.
