a thing or two on common events or event items

Hello there, I am wondering a little about common events. In my game there is an item that has been split into two pieces, and the heros have to go collect those two pieces, and then I must have them join together to become one. The item is needed to open a door, how do I set the switch to the door with the completed item. Basically, how do I use those items that have an event attached to them to open the door?
 
In a common event you'd do:

@> Change switch: [000x] == on

In the item to open the door you'd do:

Common event: /\ (the one above)

In the door event you'd do:

Condition (top left hand corner of the screen) switch [000x] is on
