A History of Ardas

A History of Ardas:
A History of Ardas is a prequel chapter released game that I am designing that will show events that happened long before the events of my other game: Collusion of Ardas.

For as long as anyone can remember, the planet of Ardas has always been ruled by two nations: Asilfre and Isilfar. Asilfre is a proud nation, priding itself in its various magical breakthroughs. The ability to raise the dead, cause ice to sweep out in waves, read people's minds, weaken people's muscles, cause meteor swarms, natural magic...it all came from Asilfre and mostly thanks to its king, King Lucav. Isilfar is also a proud nation, priding itself in raw strength. Isilfareans are taught to dislike magic, that it is an unnatural sin that all Isilfareans should not suffer from. Instead the finest weapons and armor are made in Isilfar. Together, both nations create the strongest military force on the planet, severly outdoing the other (smaller) nations in raw strength.

One day, long ago, people started to notice that something afoul was destroying the planet. The sea did not seem as alive, the grass seemed to slowly decay, the animals seemed to be less happy, the trees started to rot like it was Autumn during a mid Summers day!

The best Asilfreans and Isilfareans could not find the source of this corruption. Eventually, through advanced magic that nearly killed him, Lucav discovered the location of the corruption: inside the planet itself. After gathering their best men, both nations sent people to the core of the planet, to cure the corruption.

     They failed.

The esteemed Guardians of Ardas, a group made up of the best people from both nations, agreed to go to the core. Even the two kings, King Lucav and King Daedalus of Isilfar, agreed to go, putting their lives and their kingdoms into jeopardy.

Once there, the group of around 50 found the problem almost instantly! Foul demons of some unnatural source were inside the planet, tearing away at the ground. Avoiding the lava that was in plentiful supply, the Guardians attacked the demons and eventually found themselves staring a massive one down, which was using foul magic the likes they've never seen to destroy the life force of the planet.

The fight lasted hours, and the demon fell. Successful, the Guardians turned around and started to walk back to where they entered, to form a new portal with Lucav's help.

A sound familiar to them all ring in their ears.

As they turned around, the rest of the Guardians saw two swords locked in an epic battle, belonging to the hands of Lucav and Daedalus. No one can exactly say who attacked who first, as the Asilfreans will always say Daedalus attacked first, and the Isilfareans will always say Lucav attacked first.

They rushed towards them to stop them from fighting, and as the Guardians got closer, the sword fight has ended. Both swords lay inside each others armor, piercing their hearts. As they slowly fell to their knees, the Guardians panicked.

They had no way out of there.

The Guardians of Ardas were never heard from again, however one of them did manage to escape. Whether they still live or not, is anyones guess. How he managed to do so, is also anyone's guess. He kept his identity a secret, and unfortunately, went into hiding, it seems.

After what was declared an attack on their nation by Asilfre and Isilfar, by the opposite nation, and the loss of their kings, both nations drew themselves into a war. Smaller nations did whatever they could to survive, whether it was bartering with one side and then turning to another, or avoiding the conflict entirely.

Towns get bombarded by soldiers, as dead bodies adorn these smaller areas. Countrysides once overrun by bandits, are now overrun with a river of blood and bones. Places that were once safe for children to have fun, are now ruined. Children that once saw cute toys and such, now see swords, men and women dying, and evil magic.

One man is fed up with the injustice of the foul Isilfareans, and thanks to the motivation of his friends and his skilled sword play skills, decides to inquire to the king about a possible position in the Asilfrean army. Making his way to the castle is a trip he takes willingly, abandoning his family in the name of justice.

      Or so he thinks...

*Huge focus on storytelling! Not really a feature per se, but there's a lot of storyline segments. This is the prequel to a game I am working on, that is based on a huge (couple hundred pg) story I wrote in real life when I was younger. The idea is to give people a good idea about how the other game may be like, get feedback on the way I'm telling the story, etc. While still being a good game.

*I've made sure to make the Monster Artificial Intelligence not suck. Monsters will be in parties which compliment each other and adapt. There will be many parties of monsters, some even with a Fighter/Mage/Cleric/Thief setup, and the Fighter will do his best to protect the weakened members, but then change completely if theres no one that needs to be protected at the moment.

*Boss fights are going to be sparse, but innovative endeavors. I'm a big fan of crazy boss fights, so expect these to not just be SPAM ATTACK/BEST MOVE affairs.

*A Title System. Earn achievements and rewards for doing various things! Open a lot of treasure chests, and you might get a bonus to your stats, a unique item, or more!

*Rarity System: Items have their names colored to reflect their power and monetary value.

*Random loot drops, so you never know what you're gonna get.

Saerun:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 21 yo
Sex: Male
Class: Myrmidon

Saerun is tired of the injustices done by the Isilfarean nation, and abandons his family and home town in an attempt to rid the world of such evils. He makes his way towards his king, wishing to join the Asilfrean army. As a child of 10 seasons of age, Saerun was taught to use swords by the blacksmiths in his town, and would test himself with the various Asilfrean soldiers that would pass by.

Aeradon:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 30
Sex: Male
Class: Justicar

Aeradon was once someone of great power in the Asilfrean army, who after something bad, left the army. Deciding for a change of location, he takes up a place at Saerun's home town, for relaxation. Unfortunately, his relaxation doesn't last too long, as in an attempt to stop someone from making the same mistake he did, he follows Saerun to stop him from joining the army with the power of words. He has a past that seems to haunt him, when he sleeps.

Vaelia:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 23
Sex: Female
Class: Druid

A member of Asilfre's esteemed druidic order, she is a firm believer in protecting nature. Unfortunately, she has been on duty (a druid charged with doing some task to protect nature) ever since she was 16, and thus she is prevented from having romantic and sexual relations with any persons. Lust is a problem, and something she seems to fight daily, in the name of her order. She seems to give up a lot of things for her order, and doesn't seem to care and is very strong in keeping the order's rules followed, so she is not easily coaxed away from her beliefs.

Taerul:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 21
Sex: Male
Class: Rogue

Taerul is a very shadowy figure who Saerun seems to meet by pure chance. Seems to have knowledge of basic arcane magic. Not much known about him, other then that he acts pretty cool, piratey almost, and sneaky. Seems to be hiding a lot of things.

Caelis:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 25
Sex: Female
Class: Necronist

Caelis is a woman feared by most people who know her. Many talk to her out of this fear, afraid of what she might do if they shun her. At the ripe young age of 10 she managed to revive her pet dog from the dead, making herself the youngest wizard to do such a thing. At 13 she managed to probe someone's mind for delicate information, and had a wanted criminal put into jail. She has driven herself away from the general arcane, and now delves purely into necromantic and psionic fields making her the first Necronist. Just like her fields, she is highly detective, probing almost. She is also cold, and unfeeling.

Faeldorn:
Birth: Asilfrean
Age: 50
Sex: Male
Class: Paragon

General of the Asilfrean army, he accompanies Saerun later on down the road. His ability to command is second to none and is what gets him to stay in the party, even though his racism and harsh nature upsets the party at times. As a higher ranking officer, he rarely talks about himself, unless needed. He does whatever must be done to accomplish the job.

Jhorndis:
Birth: Isilfarean
Age: 22
Sex: Male
Class: Spellbreaker

One of Isilfareans new trained Spellbreakers, a knight who wields axes and is trained to destroy anything that is magical. He lives off of the destruction of this force, and if he had his way he would drain the life of any person who wields this force willingly and kill them. Heartless, mentally blind, rude, and destructive, Jhorndis finds himself hated by many people, and thanks to his blindness in the matter, considers everyone who hates him just "another magical fool" who "should be swept off this planet."

Raelyn:
Birth: Isilfarean
Age: 19
Sex: Female
Class: Dervish

A very alluring woman who is well endowed. She mastered the weapon known as the Scythe at the age of 15, and entered the Isilfarean army after her friend Jhorndis got in and recommended her. She hides a secret from everyone, even her friend Jhorndis and won't disclose it to anybody. She has the hots for Saerun, and tries to tempt him constantly, even during combat.

Other Important Guys:
Jordaeus: Current king of Asilfre, age 63.
Valadorus: Current king of Isilfar. Age 58.
Sir Darius Eldritch: An eldritch knight, the highest order of the Eldritch noble family. He hunts Saerun by order of King Valadorus.

Could you put some of this in spoilers?

Other then that... I guess you did a lot of writing.

Not spoilerins it.

The things I "give away", are not that bad imo. It's not like I'm giving away any of the twists or turns or anything. Just basic stuff on the characters. :p

the characters and the story (couple hundered pages is quite the feat there buddy) is what is making em play this game. Vaelia seems to be a very interesting character and I've got the feeling this might be a very good game, since you already have the story well played out.

Thanks! I'm mainly just having my mapper lay the ground work for maps, while I fix em/add to em. :) This way I learn mapping and how the tiles work too by his example.

The characters all around are hopefully going to be interesting, and human-like. Mostly because I wrote a story and built an RPG around it, instead of made an RPG and then built a story around it.

The screens leave me wanting just a tad more and the dialog seems a bit over-sophisticated, if you will, but I have a feeling you were going for that. The plot so far sounds interesting, however. How many playable characters will be in the active party?

The first chapter introduces the first 4 characters, and the following chapters will introduce the rest, up to a party of all 8 characters.

Also yeah, the dialogue is meant to be like that. :)

Here's the castle map nearly finished:

wow i liked the last two screens  thats really something you ask at night while your trying to 'sleep' :\ of course blurting it out in the middle of a fight for your life wouldn't work either so i guess at night is better. anyways, good job, its very well done in my eyes. the maps could use a little of work but now that you have this mapper I'm sure you can improve very much.  though this is just me. Good luck  :thumb: i look forward to seeing this game get finished, Just don't make it to cliche' i don't like games people work hard on and the game ends up being a giant joke.

Every RPG is cliche in some respect. This one won't be any different. But it'll have a well crafted story.

I guess I'll mention that something I've always been big on in games I make (and fail to complete) is "optional lore". By "optional lore" I mean that while you'll get the main story through quests/side quests/dungeons/characters/missions/etc, there's going to be cool optional stuff to find. There will be stuff like pages, or even books, to be found in secret areas in dungeons or the world. One of the things you'll find in Chapter 1 is a damaged copy of Isilfar's old religious scriptures, a damaged copy from the time when the Guardians fought the demons and such. It has a ton of chapters and such just like our own real world Bible (like Genesis, etc) and over the course of the 5 chapters you can find the missing sections and read them, and while it's written like the Bible, you can figure out bits and pieces of lore from it.

Basically, people who like story are going to be able to find additional (optional) bits and pieces for exploring the game fully that bring the entire story together, and maybe even clue you in on some not-as-explained stuff, and even clue you in on some stuff going down in the next game Collusions of Ardas.

People who can't be bothered to do such, don't really miss out on this. It's just a bonus.

ah the side quest, a wonderful thing where even storyline games such as final fantasy can joke around as much as they want :shades: but if you were big on storyline games and you went out to buy one, and find out it has jokes for graphics, barely any story line and such that would suck, thus the invention of the side quest was made. lol. well its looking good, now back to work on the unnamed project about war against the Draco king i haven't named yet...

WIP of one of the dungeons in Chapter 1:
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/9466 ... ldoph0.png[/img]

There is various quests involving the dungeon, but needless to say you find out (through previous ventures) that bandits which are attacking people passing by into the capital are making their cove in this dungeon, which has a secret entrance you manage to find thanks to some persuasion.

The dungeon is going to be 3 levels, and have a fair amount of traps and secret passages. Step on a tile and you might just get an arrow to the face, ouch!

Secret passages hold special treasure, or even monsters that have found them first, and feast upon those foolish enough to enter them.

Should you survive, you will find the leader of the bandits, which is going to be the first boss fight of the game.

There's nothing particularly special about this fight in how you defeat him, it's definitely just an HP fight. However, the enemy composition is the bandit leader (who is a fighter, basically), and 4 other bandits, which are his most trusted friends, so to speak. The most experienced of them all.

They include a Druid who has turned against her faith for greed, an Arcane Mage, a Knight, and a Shaman. These foes are slightly weaker than your party in terms of stats, however they have more varied abilities and their AI works together.

The Knight uses abilities to lessen or even completely negate damage from his allies, but if there's no one that needs protecting, he starts swinging his sword pretty hard too! The Bandit Leader is the offensive guy of course, with abilities closely related to Saerun's. The Shaman is a troublesome character because he summons weak Shades to the fight, that provide party wide buffs and light damage to your party. The Druid is the healer, and can also greatly slow down one of your characters as well with a debuff. The Arcane Mage is all the while going to be doing light AoE damage and casting spells like crazy, while buffing the Druid and Shaman as well. The Druid, Shaman, and Arcane Mage all carry potions they use during the fight to restore Mana (a random amount of 1-3 per character, randomly generated before the fight), and the Knight and Leader have healing potions (1-4 per character). These characters are also programmed to (when in dire need) take potions from their allies if its the only way they can survive.

The encounter is meant to be geared as a challenge of beating a similar party, and feels like you're fighting a party of people who compliment each other and work together, instead of just doing big damage and having massive defense and 1239012903812903801 HP.

I'll post later about the other dungeon in the 1st chapter, but what makes it special is that if anyone runs out of MP, they automatically die. So that's something to watch out for!

What in the fuck are you talking about?

DN, the new map looks good. Is that the whole dungeon or just one floor?

I'm gonna touch on 2 things:
1 - Skills:
In a lot of RPGs there's either too few, yet vastly different skills, or a lot of similar yet almost always 90% useless skills.

This game is going to have a lot of some similar-some different skills, that are almost always useful. Debuffs (status ailments) are usable on pretty much every boss.

There's also gonna be some interesting skills. Vaelia gets an ability early on that heals an ally for HP each turn for 5 turns.

Later on she gets an ability that can remove that HoT (Heal over Time) buff on one ally, and heals that ally for a fairly large sum.

Vaelia also gets the ability to remove poison effects some time into the game...but with a twist! If it removes a Poison effect, it'll attempt to poison all foes.

Taerul has magical hexes, which are fairly strong debuffs. They cost a lot, but they hex a foe, and lowers a stat, or a resistance, and grants him the opposite. For example, one hex lowers the enemies Cold damage resistance, and makes all of Taerul's attacks strike for Cold damage.

Later on he gets an ability that can remove any of the Hexes, and upon doing so an extra effect occurs, whether that be a short HoT/DoT/direct damage/AoE, etc.

These give skills interesting combos and cool effects. A crap skill early on can become pretty good later on thanks to this system, making no skill truly useless.

2 - The Second Dungeon
The second dungeon of chapter 1 is a tower, once ruled by one of Asilfre's greatest magicians, until he became corrupted by a foul evil.

Pretty cliche, heh. Except not everything is what it seems! While in this dungeon, if any character reaches 0 MP, they die.

Since this tower is completely corrupted, there's also a lot of magical traps. That are amazingly going to steal your MP, more often than not.

There's also a lot of hidden passages, though they may not be safe, either...

The boss of the dungeon is a fairly important character with some backstory, compared to the bandit leader. I'm gonna keep that secret...

The boss must be defeated by destroying his MP, and each turn he will absorb a % of each party members MP, which he channels into Spirit Energy. Spirit Energy powers the bosses strongest abilities, including strong MP steals, damaging attacks w/debuffs, and even a boost to his MP...and some other secret effects too!

In the first chapter, the 2nd dungeon contains some of the best items in the 1st chapter, and so its a pretty good place to get equipment. There may be some other, better, items elsewhere tho. .. .. .

Your description of the first boss fight is impeccable. That's so much more detailed and balanced and just generally thought out than anything else on these boards. It looks like you've got the story and game mechanics down perfectly to make this play like an actual game rather than an interactive storybook.

The new dungeon map is great btw, though the other ones do - as Moogle said - leave me 'wanting more'. Which is a shame because there's a fuck load of stuff in here that really separates this from the rest, but people will just overlook it if it isn't pretty-pretty on first glance.

hey, thanks a lot!

To be fair, the enhanced castle area was a bit lacking because it wasn't really FINISHED per se yet, http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/6585 ... ityqx3.png is still the latest its done so far. I still need to add NPCs, and more flora and fauna, yes. But it looks pretty good imo.

The maps will all be up to snuff with that dungeon map sure enough, don't you worry!

But again, I don't really mind if people overlook this because it's not "pretty" enough for them. The problem with the industry as a whole is people are so "this must be pretty" that companies spend millions and millions of dollars on a gamble because they have to make it BLEEDING EDGE. Likewise, people spend so much time making their games look pretty, they add MONTHS of dev time to it, and they never get completed. There's more to an RPG than just the graphics, and I'm really about trying to make the story and gameplay shine. Screw graphics. The RTP is good enough. If certain people overlook my game because it's not "pretty" enough for them, then so be it. Their loss. I'd rather complete my game and have an excellent, well done story, with fun, sometimes innovative, fights, then be sitting here a year from now and give up on my game because it doesn't have the uber graphics, y'know?

You'll probably be glad to know, like I mentioned, that boss encounters like that will become more what the enemy encounters will be later on. Stuff like diversified classes for monsters that work together will be common place in Ch.2-5. I've even made a few enemy only classes that are on par with the hero classes in terms of ability number and such. I feel a lot of RPG Makers don't use the monster parameters to the best of their ability, and instead force themselves into a bit of a hole because they are used to games like Final Fantasy, where monsters are very much just "there". Even 2 guards from the same force in a Final Fantasy game just attack...they rarely heal each other with items, or well, anything.

One of the things I'm working on is actually an encounter in one of the later chapters, where you'll have a couple soldiers to fight, and there will actually be "cover" in the battle, that if the enemy gets low on HP, they'll hide behind, and use healing potions and even grenades and such against you, while being protected, but you can destroy the cover and "reveal" them.

EDIT:
I would also like to mention that these encounters are basically going to be way more interesting since the AI is programmed in such a way that they have options, so no 2 fights with the same people will really be the same!
