Yeah I enjoyed the semi-tranperent slap to your face too. "Your friends and by association, you, are a bunch of idiots that can't understand simple symbolism, congratulations!"
The specific people that I overheard talking to each other sounded like idiots, so their complaints about the movie should be taken with a grain of salt. They were hot, ditzy teenagers. As for his specific friends, who knows - maybe they were confused about certain things in the movie that weren't explained instead of the general plot of the movie. There are individual elements within the plot (the room itself, Jackson's character, etc) that aren't explained well and thus can be a cause of confusion. With popcorn flicks like this, I think it's kinda like time travel movies - you're just not supposed to question it too much and just focus on the actual plot points - so as far as the main plot goes, it is about as straightforward as you can get.
(The following paragraph can be gathered directly from the previews.)
He wants to find the truth about paranormal activity (partly for his job and partly for his daughter), he goes in this room that is allegedly "an evil f@#$ing room", and when he goes in, that's exactly what he finds - he's trapped in a room for the vast majority of the movie and trippy/scary stuff happens while he is in there, all of which appear to be manifestations of a room that's trying to kill him.
That's exactly what you get in the movie. While watching it, there's really only two main questions that you can come up with that I know of pertaining to what's going to happen:
1. Will he die or will he live?
2. What the hell is up with all this crazy stuff? [Variants include: Is this really happening? Is the room causing it? Is it really a paranormal experience or is their a non-paranormal explanation for why he's seeing all this trippy stuff (insanity, hallucinations, dreams, etc)?]
In the end, you most assuredly find out the answers to those questions - one right after the other.
The things that are not explained well are not required to get what happens to the main character throughout the movie.
