$100 laptops??

I recently saw on the news that they've made $100 laptops for kindergardeners.

Anyone know anything about these super-cheap lappys? Do they have sufficient memory space? Internet access? Programs?

Can I get one? I don't care if I have a teeny, childish lappy with a plastic, green cover. A lappy's a lappy, and I need one for my projects.

I thought the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) thing was for under developed country kids (aka poor kids) and did, indeed, perform pretty much all ours do, but cost around a hundred bucks. They've been reprogrammed to be as efficient as possible (which was pretty much reprogramming user land applications).

@Cruelty: If it's old news, then why is the news making such a fuss about it now?

@sithlord999: Pictures and Word Documents is pretty much all I need it for.

I just wanna know if it's useful, and if I can get one.

I've heard nothing about this recently, but I heard about it a year ago. I'd say it qualifies as old news, but then again, I don't see much news all the time, I only get the real big stories and the occasional random one.

I doubt a $100 would be all that useful, but just look at the damn website for one laptop per child, it doesn't seem like something you could just go out and buy, but then again I also don't feel like reading, so here: http://laptop.org/

I read about it in a PC magazine (except here it is the ?100 laptop (GBPound)... nice exchange rate. :p)

It was origionally designed for children in the "emerging world", but became popular here so they are also selling it here. They have pictures of the "professional" looking version, it's a lot different to the above, looks more like one of those Mac iBooks or whatever they are called.

It uses flash memory (up to 16 GB) instead of a HDD.

It runs Linux, not Windows, to save costs.
