Make Something Play Something 2021

I know a maze isn't that impressive. But I thought maybe a 3D maze using Effekseer would be *technically* impressive.
I've got a proof of concept using test graphics. But Effekseer has it's own issues I have to deal with. Some things don't display the same way in Effekseer as they do in MZ. Why can't anything work like it's suppose to?

If I nail down the movement/camera controls tonight, I might have a presentable albeit simple maze by the end.
But I'm also not super eager to do anymore than what I have because I feel like I'm the only one doing anything.

I've finally shaken off my procrastination and tiredness, and started work on something yesterday, fyi. Shorter time-span than I'd like, but oh well. 🤷‍♂️

Alright, it's 4AM, and this is what I've got to show so far. Not much, so I got to work bloody hard tomorrow... there's no game yet! Took ages to finally decide what idea to go with, so out the blue I decided to go for something heavily inspired by Plants vs Zombies. Still got to do menus, UI, make graphics for the Trick-or-treaters, etc, etc. Aaaaand I have work tomorrow evening, so this is going to be interesting.
But I'm off to bed now.

Hi guys!

Thank you all for entering the contest. We actually had not a bad turnout, with three games, two musical entries (with a LOT of music), two resource packs and a review of one of our games.

As this was spread between categories and each category only had a few entries it seems awkward to judge what would be a best and worst in each category, so I am going to have to decide how the prize fund will be dished out.

On balance I feel like the most time and effort has gone into the Music category, which is good because the next event I plan is the HBGames Music Festival (but we'll get to that later).

Here's my judgement.

MUSIC: SACRIFICIAL JOY (DisguisedCrows)
This is an entire song, lyrics written and recorded. This has to be my favourite piece of this contest and it's what really stood out to me. Outstanding.

MUSIC: HALLOW WILLOW LOOPS (RyanArt)
From a game-making point of view these are most useful, so it was tough to pick a winner in this category. 'Joy just pips it to the post but there are some great eerie sounds in here and they are so immediately usable in a game.

GRAPHICS: PUDDING
Pudding supplied a lot of graphical resources for hallowe'en and they're made from scratch, so he just heads off this category.

GRAPHICS: WORLD MAP GRAVE AND CEMETARY (CoyoteCraft)
These are immediately usable and they are missing from the world map tilesets. I know they come from a lot of personal research into the RTP tilesets from CoyoteCraft.

GAME: PAPER MALL (Cam)
Though I do not understand it, the concept of a 3D maze is not one we have seen at HBGames before and the graphics are that curious mix of horrifying and childlike that just makes this game so goddamned creepy. To me this is the game that has had the most effort put in and has the most uniqueness and so it wins this category.

GAME: THE MONASTERY (Pudding)
Our RPG Maker entry; I can tell work has gone into this game even if the mapping isn't quite to my taste.

GAME: TRICKED FOR TREATS (Xhukari)
It's a whole game, from scratch, what can I say. It's quick and simple but it plays well once you work it out. (Only thing really lacking is a points readout on the "you died" screen to keep track of your high scores!)

REVIEW: THE LADY PUPPET (Pudding)
I was disappointed to find this was the only review to be submitted; nonetheless it is invaluable for the Hallow'zeen when that finally surfaces so thank you.

PRIZES?

Here is my verdict.

Sacrificial Joy is the most impressive piece so it wins the contest.
Pudding entered three categories, posted the only review, and created multiple graphical resources in a set. He wins second place.
RyanArt created some amazing music which all fits together in a set. He wins third place.
Cam submitted the best game, I just felt the musical entries were better and so deserved the 1st place prize.
Xhukari and CoyoteCraft both deserve a mention (and I do feel bad choosing winners from a pool of five entrants).

OK, I am going to make a decision.

DisguisedCrows wins £50 and 1st place.
Pudding wins £30 and 2nd place.
RyanArt wins £20 and 3rd place.
Cam wins £20 for having the best game in the game jam.
Xhukari and CoyoteCraft win £10 because why not.

💙 thanks!

Loops/loop packs are a common thing in the producer community for collaborations, that gave me the idea to do a mix-and-match loop set, and I enjoy noodling around on my keyboard and sequencer

I'll probably drop another, its cool my loops can be useful to 2 communities 😬

Apologies guys but eZine 32 is going to be a little late (which has annoyed me because we had a good streak going). Things at work are getting rough as a dog's arse, coupled with the launch of the Christmas shop and such which I will be involved in. I don't have the nights I wanted to work on this. It will be coming though.
