Sorry but if you have followed ezine's tuts, your
proportions wouldnt have much problems...

(rollseyes) yes, because anyone who follows tutorials will be able draw with correct proportions -_- riiight.

@ XP Learner, you'll notice that a lot of people here draw either "short" boxy characters and the like (really popular with guys) or relly slender looking characters with relatively big heads (really popular with the girls).

Judging from your sketches you were trying to do neither and you were trying to go for a more realistic style. For that I applaud you- a lot of people find it difficult to draw that way without experience/ models.

That said, that's what you need: Experience and models. I really dislike manga tutorials -_-

Oh and kudos, few are brave enough to draw characters with moustaches.

Well Dreamwind i was trying to go for a unique style but realistic yes. something different from most of the anime/manga art. but i do need expereice at drawing faces. so i practice at this everyday. finding models however will prove difficult.

I have some more art if anyone likes to see. i'll post it.

-______________-

if you're trying to imitate that manly man style in the mag then you're missing three things,

1. the face is rigidly boned,

2. the husky muscular character you want to make has sideburns and lots of facial hair

3. the sketch in the mag is shaded and uses lines of different thickness.

Well actually i'm not really imitating just following the rules but adding my own style to it.

buddy, who's to say those three points I just stated weren't part of the rules? especially for characters like yours that are supposed to be gruff?

Pretty boys don't have moustaches. You wanted to make rugged characters so quit vindicating yourself and start learning from the stuff I tell you.

Alright then dreamwind besies this character i did is based off one of the default character sets in RMXP a Merchant.

But i'll take your advice dreamweaver. i guess it's back to the drawing board then for me.

No body has a triangle shaped head.... >_>... Sorry...

Is the guy you drew Jewish... No offense but I think I saw one of those rabbi cap things.....

I think you should practice... Took me twelve years and apparently I still suck...(In the eyes of House)

Okay, dreamwind, i think you and XPL have to chat or talk via PM instead of here.. And i suggest XPL should post what he has drawn for proof of progress.

XPL, use THICKER paper and scan your work maybe 150-300 dpi.

From your sideview, i think your flaw is the face composition. If you want to learn how to draw well MORE REALISTIC people, do not refer to ANIME tutorials... I am also learning to sketch more realistic using charcoal or 7B graphite pencils. Uh, i think you should consult non-manga/anime tuts.

Your sideview has a bumpy face and the mustache is too high or the eye is too low. Forehead is also boom, too bulky.

I know you're trying to make a unique style but your struggle lead to worse results. I suggest imitate the tutorials first THEN make your own style, dontyathink? :D

EDIT:
Here is a work i have posted in my gallery before the hack... I sketched it using H and 6B pencils, but i didnt like much the results. So i scanned it, and colored it in Photoshop.
(meet my girlfriend, uh, almost like her :D)

I really suggest you imitate the tuts first, get a picture for your subject and draw away.. Good Luck! :)

When you first buy a lego set.
You use the individual blocks and build up whats on the instructions first.
Then you tear it down and build what you want.

First learn how to draw realistically, then go into your style if you do wish to. That way even though its cartoony, its realistically believable.
