I usually dont watch the WWF shows, but I happened to be bored today and watched a bit of smackdown today.

My question to everyone, is...

Is what they do on that show Real all-out fighting, or is it fake and scripted?  or is it a little bit of both in there?

from what I watched, they beat the hell out of each other, and by the end of it neither of them had a broken bone, and neither of them was bleeding at all, when they honestly should have.

I have heard from various people that it is fake, and from the same amount of different people that it is real, and they are just brute muscle and dont get hurt.

Which do you think?

This isnt even a debatable discussion. Its both, moreso majority on the fake part. They cut small areas around major blood vessels so if they get hit or touched easily, it will burst and they will bleed, thus making it realistic. Most of it however is fake. There was one incedent where a wrestler came down from the celing and died (Bret Hart?) and then everyone thought it was real.

To go off topic a bit I think its dumb. I used to watch all the time when wrestling was interesting with all of the drama and such but now its just lame. Why take steroids and various other drugs just to go hop around for 3 hours? And in the event you do get hit, its not even much because your wound is predetermined.

Theres a great documentary on wrestling that reveals the WWF and all kinds of stuff, I forget what its called however.

But like I said, its incredibly bogus, only real when blood appears (even then the whole passing out shit is for the birds).

Honestly, how could that be real? No matter how many muscles you have you are going to bleed, when someone uses those moves on you. It is all just one big show!

From me you geta big fat Fake!!!

I used to watch it as a kid but things have changed quite a bit. The likes of Hulk Hogan, Macho man randy savage and the legion of doom brought wrestling to life, but the latest candidates are coming through by the thousands and I don't even care. What I love about wrestling is the fact they hire personalities to keep up with their current war affairs. I mean this by when I used to watch it back in the 90's the big enemy was a Russian (The cold war), nowadays it's a Muslim (Afghanistan & Iraq). And ironically they always seem to do well then get hammered by an American somewhere down the line.

As for the question you're asking, wrestling is about as real as Michael Jackson's .... everything. Can't argue the fact it isn't entertaining, though!

It was Owen Hart that died.

To me Pro wrestling is nothing more than a violent soap opera. It was much better in the '70s and '80s, although it was still pretty soap opera-ish then.

Having said that, I do have a bit of a soft spot for wrestling. I think describing it as fake is harsh on the wrestlers, since it is clearly a pretty dangerous activity. The wrestlers are effectively stuntmen.

I used to LOVE the stuff. It was like a badass soap opera. I loved how incredibly cheesy and staged everything was. I stopped watching after Owen Hart died, and Stone Cold left for the first time.

But yeah, I believe it's a little of both. Remember that beating the utter shit out of each other isn't as eloquent as dancing, which means mistakes and some injuries are more likely to happen. It helps create that illusion, even if most of it is staged.

From what I understand, the fights themselves aren't prescripted per se, but it's agree who will win before hand. From then on, it's an improvisational performance piece.

That's pretty much my view of it.

Its not really a view, its a fact. Thats EXACTLY what happens.

To everyone saying its a little real, like I said its only real to the blood factor and to any accidents (but those are more the exception to the rule).

The WWF is fake, the end.

Yea, its WWE now. There was a thing with the world wildlife foundation, so they changed it.

i used to like wrestling way back in the day.maybe when i was in 4th grade or so. even back then it was pretty 'soap opera'-ish. but no its just.. fucking terrible. at least back then, the shit was at least SOMEWHAT believable. now i watch an 'episode' (and they really are episodes now) and just fucking LOL at the amount of fake ass 'drama' on it. they throw out some of the most slapstick, unbelievably stupid shit, and people actually believe it. its retarded.
from what i remember, wcw was a little better at not being cheesy tho.

hopefully they'll never fag out the UFC.

I watched WWF when I was in college because it was so ridiculous that it made me laugh.  I think the most ridiculous part was when DeGeneration X "kidnaps" Steph McMahon and tricks her into marrying Triple H... then later it turns out she staged the whole thing to get away from her Dad and this and that... it was so awesomely ridiculous.  Everyone was like "oh my gosh, how are we going to unmarry her??  This is a terrible situation!"  As if they didn't just roll 5 minutes of footage showing how she was kidnapped and the whole thing was illegal... so awesome.

It's a mix of both.

Some moves are "real" in the extent that they inflict minor pain or injuries if they are done, these include grabs, some physical attacks, etc.

Weapons are fake. Anything that they get hit with, is fake. It might cause a bit of pain, but not to these guys. Chairs? Made of weak material, and hit with parts that AT BEST may stun them for like, a second. Tables? They are specifically instructed to hit them down the middle, to lessen the injury.

The stories are 99% of the time completely fake as well, especially the redone histories for when they take a fighter and redo him as another entity.

Fights are predetermined on who wins, for the entire "storyline", which is pre-written for a "season" just like any show. Seasons in this case are the arcs between Pay Per View matches.

However, wrestlers are mainly given a GENERAL outline. They are allowed a little give or take to make it seem more realistic.

Cameramen are specifically instructed in techniques to make the blows (especially the faker ones) look more real by changing views at points of impact (PoI) to trick viewers into seeing more contact.

The only "real" part is some attacks, grabs, and accidents which happen (hitting them in the head with your feet off the turnbuckle by accident, etc. Occurs sometimes). At the end of the day, these guys all get drunk together in a strip club.

Lol, wrestling.

My only exposure to it is from an autistic aquaintance of mine in elementary school, who was constantly OMFG WRESTLING!! SMACK DOWN!!!. This has rendered me completely incapable of taking the WWE or anything relating to it seriously. Also, it's fake.

If im not mistaken they actually did get married irl in the near future.

Irony be a cruel mistress.

High Hopes

Awesome Bro

They did get married, and have a Daughter: Aurora-Rose Levesque.

WWE is scripted in terms of the damage done, as well as the storyline. What actually happens is up to the wrestlers in action, with the exception being the big spots, which are scripted. Other than spots, the performers in the ring decide what the crowd sees. It's a profession that takes years of training to be able to do anything they do, as it takes alot of skill to be able to slam someone on their back without lifting them up. If mistakes are made, peoples' careers could be at stake. Just look at Hayabusa. Or Bret Hart. Or, just go on YouTube and look at all the near misses New Jack had.

Besides, a good portion of the guys in WWE have no mic skills or wrestling ability, and the writers are laughable. WWE is getting better though. All they need is a way to resurrect Chris Benoit and hire Kurt Angle and have them rematch. Best match in history.
