I am a writer. Not in a sense of being well-known, or good at it, but more that I like to create stories. Ever since I could remember, I was writing stories. Some have faded from my mind, disappeared from my belongings, yet I still recall the basics of the ideas.
I particularly love fantasy, though psychological and ghostly/fiendish horror comes at a close second. I've had many attempts of writing a full story - a novel even, yet I always quit in the end. I've even adopted several partners, but they never seem to work out.
This past weekend I concepted a fantasy race; mainly based on common fantasy races and past ideas. To my friends and family, it is obvious I favor characters with pointed ears. I would have settled on making Elves, but it wasn't that simple. I've read reviews that if I don't make them unique, then I would be copying Lord of the Rings. I also love Faeries.
Then came the Fey race.
A race of magical beings are composed of both "Mana" (a mystical, unsee-able substance in the air) and flesh. They appear human, except for their pointed ears and glittery skin - which is just "Mana" that can be seen in dim light. The origins of them having the innards of some form of energy came from an idea I had many years ago, of a girl who fell from the sky as a child to save that world from a destructive black hole. In that lore, Stars were magical beings that watched over the world. The story was supposed to end when the female threw herself into the void, shining brightly in the process - dying in the end.
The Fey's magical powers were determined by the moon phase they were conceived in. The abilities they gained differed from one another. They also run out of their power for awhile - until they recharge. They are only race in the unnamed world with such powers.
Based on my experiences of Faeries in fiction/gaming, I made them to be very physical. Most of their spells activate upon touch, and during rituals - and even sleeping with each other - their powers kind of combine for a short while, making them stronger. This gives them some sort of... high, for lack of a better word.
So far it makes sense to me, though at the same, it makes me believe that readers will think I made them that way just add some sort of sexual element.
Then, I came up with the idea for other beings to obtain such magic (other than through their offspring). When a Fey and another being, uh, sleep together, the Fey's magic is transfered over. The Fey loses their power until they recharge, and the recipient keeps the power for a a bit based on their lover's power level.
I've given the Fey the weakness of metal, so the other races can capture them, exposing said weakness. The Fey do have their own homeland, but some do venture out.
Again, readers may think I added the above for sexual purposes.
I'm not afraid to mention or write about such things, but I don't want people to get the wrong idea. I was even quite excited about a companion Novella to a larger idea: about a young Fey girl who was born into slavery of a noble family. Each time her owner's power ran out, and she ran out, the eldest/only son of the head of the family, would steal her powers for himself. He even had a past, where the Fey's charm, or "Glamour" - and his own father teaching him - where he became mad upon first recieving a Fey's power and has even become addicted to it.
There was even some ideas where this protagonist was a child born on a Lunar Eclispe, where her magic were even MORE powerful. Another idea was that her magic caused her owner to go insane.
Either way, because of the nature of the power transforance, this girl would have a tragic life. Again, I'm not afraid of writing about that. Though, I'm afraid of readers thinking I'm into some strange things or something.
I'm thinking of dropping this whole racial idea, and developing something else.
Then I think about the race of stars from that earlier story. There would be tons of differences.
1. They don't live on fantasy world, so they would be rare
2. Other races could simply extract their magic with technology, but I didn't really want to use such things
3. Stars drop some form of ball of energy that represents their magic, but weakened
4. The plot I originally had for the novella could not simply happen, unless I tweaked it heavily - the girl being a captured star that was found by the noble family, who's extracted magic caused the son to become mad, addicted, among other things.
In short, I'm basically wondering what everyone else thinks I should do. Or if any of these ideas appeal to them.
Thansk for advice, insights, and reading!
((I recently had a thought - today in fact - that if a guy was a star instead, but he was never abused or anything, because he looked entirely human. I do have a character in mind, but he is not the intended the main protagonist. Of course, then I need another race for my pointy-eared characters. XD My fear: the original female protagonist is just a "love interest" character.))
