worst (or best!) gifts ever

talk about presents thread

saw this article on msnbc:
some of 2010's silliest gifts
(actually i would like many of them as gifts ;x ... i really like silly shit though.)

gifts you've gotten FROM others

what's the worst, silliest, strangest, or most offensive gift you've ever gotten?

and what's the best or your most favorite gift you've ever received?

gifts you've gotten FOR others

ever gave a gift out of spite, or as a practical joke, or one that YOU thought was a good idea, but turned out to be horrible?

or have you ever given a gift that just absolutely was the best thing ever for the recipient and it just made their whole damn day/week/month/year/eon?

details!!!

(and it can be gifts for xmas, b-day, national maple syrup appreciation day, whatever, so long as they're gifts to someone who isn't you.)

worst gift i've ever gotten:

for christmas when i was 14, my aunt gave me a gift card voucher for 3 free months of the Jenny Craig Weight Loss Program.
i was actually underweight and anorexic at the time ;x

she had just completed a few months of it herself, and had lost like 10lbs, so i think she was mostly just excited about it. she may have gotten it for free and then re-gifted or something. i don't think it was meant to be malicious, but it was wrapped nicely (in a box ... a card in a box), so she must've put SOME thought into it.

kind of killed my xmas b/c it had been a rather rough year and that was kind of icing on the cake to say "here miss fattypants, you can get less fat with this", when i ALREADY had a real issue with self image lol.

but i smiled and said "ah ... oh. er ... yes, ... neat! program to lose ... weight. thank ... you".

silliest gift i've ever gotten:

to celebrate an anniversary (with an ex) a while back, we went out with some friends to a restaurant. a friend of mine slid me a present.

i was a big tomb raider fan at the time. she'd gotten me a copy of Womb Raider on dvd. a horribly amazingly awful lesbian porno starring a somewhat unattractive chick, in a costume loosely based on lara croft.

the server happened to be at the table and she went 'oh, you got a movie? oh, it's---oh. OH." and then she just kind of walked off. i lol'd hard.

silliest gift i've ever gotten someone else:

bacon soap. soap made out of bacon that smells like bacon.

sadly, i did not give it to bacon :(.

worst gift i've ever gotten someone else:

for secret santa at the office at an old job, i got a coworker a bottle of jack daniel's.

the year before, we'd had a big xmas party and he got shitfaced on the stuff. so i figured it'd be humorous AND cool.

he opened it and then kind of blushed and sighed and looked sad. then the chick sitting next to me whispered, "uh ... he's a recovering alcoholic. he's been going to AA meetings."

i should've apologized or something but i felt too awkward!!

Worst gift I've ever gotten. Braces. From my mother. My teeth are almost perfect now, but I'm 21 years old and I have braces, and I have to deal with sick people every day, and I'm just hoping they won't think I'm 7 years old.

Best gift I've ever gotten. A Yamaha acoustic piano. From my parents. I practice every day.

Worst/silliest gift I've ever given. A combo from McDonald's for someone's birthday, which I ate.

Remembering that stuff off the top of my head right now is for some reason incredibly hard... but since I like the concept of the thread, let me work, I guess...

Nerdiest (and therefore coolest) gift I ever got was the binary watch I got this Xmas... that's right, that's 5 days ago. Pretty cool device, been looking for something as cool for ages, and frankly, I have no idea how my mom was able to find it while I couldn't... >> It actually was a surprise, too, not a "hey what do you want, I'll get it to you" present... :)

Lamest gift is obviously the pile of gifted socks I got somewhere in my closet, amassed from every year's birthday and Xmas (and sometimes Easter) events... seriously, I got enough now.

I got a sculpture made of acryl glass from secret santa once... No idea what the hell it's supposed to be, but yeah... keeping it in my room on an elevated, exponated position till this day...

Other than that, not really an eventful thing for me, I guess... not that I didn't get any awesome presents a lot, but as it's mostly being discussed before, I got less "OMG look at that gift!!!" moments, which makes it very hard to remember.

Besides, I kinda like most of the gifts in the linked page as well...

best gift i ever got was when I was 12. I was grounded from my computer in November, and one day i came home and my computer was missing. My mom told me my dad sold it. Christmas morning comes, and low and behold, I get my computer back. My dad had actually taken it to a shop to get it upgraded. it now had a whopping 80GB hard-drive rather than the 2GB it had previously, as well as a 3d graphics card (pro savage) that didn't support hardware t&l (meaning I couldn't play the newest games), 256MB of RAM (up from the previous 64MB), a 3.5" floppy drive, a CD-ROM (it could only READ the discs), and a new-fangled CD-RW drive. Oh, and it now ran Windows 2000 Pro rather then Windows 98 Pro. And it was all in a shinny new case, and I got a new 17' flat-panel (read 15") monitor to go with.

Yeah, that was the day. Now the only things left from that build would be the case and a few screws (the monitor still works and now sits in my mom's office at work). most of the old hardware went into upgrading my dad's computer when i rebuilt mine last year.

EDIT: Oh, yes. It also had an Intel Celeron 1Ghz processor, up from it's previous Pentium II 600Mhz

When I turned fourteen, all my loser friends were off hanging out together and forgot about my party. One guy showed up, he was an hour late, and he gave me Eragon as a present. Eragon is quite possibly the worst book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of books. Incidentally, that was the last time I ever had a birthday party.

As for best present, I dunno. Most expensive would be my DS around when they were new. I also got a cat once when I was little, but she was really grumpy and wasn't too fond of extremely hyperactive children. I'm also very fond of my Cthulhu plush doll, but I specifically requested it (and my mother was like "wtf????" -- it was pretty funny).

Best present was my Ps2. My mom and sister tried playing a joke on me by taking it out of the box and filling the box with books. It's actually the most my parents have spent on me, usually I get socks.

I put money on my list this year and my sister was a wise-ass and gave me a jar of pennies.

lol thats pretty good, i might steal that idea!!!!

this xmas my bf's mom wanted an iPad. we kept telling her to wait a couple of months for toshiba's android tablet (she already has a droid phone b/c she hated the iphone but lessons are hard to learn i guess!!) but oh well.

my bf's dad got her an iPad anyway ... but we nabbed it. took the device itself out of the packaging, hid it, put a rock into the box instead, and then wrapped it.

when she opened it she got all excited and opened the box and i wish we'd taken a pic of her face b/c it was priceless to see her go ":( what"

as we handed her the real thing, my bf said "well here's something almost as good."

My Nan died earlier in the year. Christmas has traditionally been a big thing in my family and my Nan always stays round my house for a few days. We normally have presents that are like a tenner each, maybe £30 each in total, nothing big or anything. Well my Dad figured this year would be really shitty and wanted to cheer us up so he went out and went mad. I think it worked though.

My sister got a new TV, my mom a Nintendo DSi, and me an iPod touch 32GB.

It is fantastic but I wish the money had been spent on something more important like paying off the huge debt or fixing the car.

:(

My best gift was my new computer from Star this year - including two teddy bears. :3

The worst, was probably my ex leaving me like a day or two before my birthday. >.<
