World Map in Photoshop

Those lakes have no sources.

Also, your photoshop worldmap making style is similar to mine heh.

I didn't design the map locations, I just created it! It's for someone else. So I was looking for advice on the visuals rather than technicalities. Anyway... I'm sure there are just standalone lakes about?

Yeah they are pretty alike in style, though I'd say my way looks a little more 3d and yours looks more birds-eye in comparison. I think yuo should maybe reduce your sand texture a little bit, but otherwise it looks nice!

I likes it a lot, but...

... as Prexus said, the lakes have no source. :/

Oh, and Prexxy... Trivium? I know it means more than just the band, but I can tell many people are going to be like "Foo! Copyin' offa tha band!" ':|lol

Looks pretty good to me. Though the sandy beaches don't seem like they are attached to the cliff like edges of the land. If that makes sense...It just seems that the land is floating over the sand to me.

Really love the texture for your grass though.

You are right Makia, thanks for picking that out. I put it down to the fact it needed a slight shadow between the cliff and the sand as well as minimal texture added. Seems okay now.

@ Buster - Like I said, i didn't design the layout, I just made it. :P

Sorry, I was still in the Full Reply window while you had posted that. ':|

You should tell whoever designed it that they're WRONG!!!! :p

I don't believe there's a whole lot you can do to make the map look more realistic if you must stick with the current design...

You could always look to satellite images on Google maps or similar maps from other games such as Guild Wars for inspiration.

Yes actually there are plenty of standalone lakes. For example it could have a spring underneath it or it's source could be just rainwater filling up a hole that had a source a long time ago but was weathered away, etc. For a real life example of a stand alone lake. Crater lakes, For example one famous one, Crater Lake, Oregon USA. What had happened was some time ago a large volcano exploded the top flew up, the middle pieces dissapated, and the bottom crater remained. The top fell back down inside the middle of the crater. Over many years of rain and snow collecting in it, it eventually formed a lake in the center of the crater, with the top of the mountain becoming an island. Has the clearest water of most lakes tis does.

yesh...sorry for the long history story, but there are lakes that stand alone!

I DO love the grass textures and the trees are nice too, I'm not to keen on the shadow of the left mountain on the grass, does make it look like it's floating on the land mass. Perhaps bluring it slightly or just making the grass itself darker and not having the shadow there will do the trick?

A standalone lake would eventually dry up if there was no source, unless the area is unnaturally humid and rainy/snowy all year round. Crater Lake likely has a source somewhere, probably under ground.

Regardless, it's easiest to portray lakes to have a source, especially in such a rich mountainous area like that. A river could easily be coming down from that mountain, hit the north lake, run out of that lake into the next lake, and then run from that lake out to the ocean. And it would likely do that, too.

No Crater Lake doesn't have an underground source. (tis because of snow and rain, and if you listen to anyone from Portland it rains every single day ^^)

But, like I say it doesn't always have to be on the surface, to show how the lake would get water. And eventually everything changes. Delta's are made at river's edges, then disapear as more and more sediment collect at it's mouth. Glaciers melt and disapear into lakes. Volcanoes destroy forests or surrounding areas, then years later make new land edges or islands, etc. Land masses shift and move into diffrent configurations.

A living planet always changes, but relatively speaking to the human standpoint it may be eons before those changes are seen. So I think IMO that it's okay to have lakes standalone or things that seem not to make sense in an area. The Earth is too unique to just pin a label that ALL lakes need a source to be seen. I mean look at recent discoveries. It was thought NOTHING could live at the deepest part of the ocean without light. But tube worms and even an whole ecosystem was discovered. That's like I say how I look at it, whether or not the person who commisioned Calibre to do that map sees it that way is up to them ^^

This might have been said already (I'm not gonna read every post), but your sand doesn't really look like sand. It looks like an outer glow; reducing its brightness would help.

It's funny how much something I can't change has created so much dispute!

And yes Serenade, that part has been seen to already. Thanks anyway.

Can we get an update? I'm curious to see how it looks now that you've fixed it. n.n If not that's cool.

Much nicer! The mountains seem to flow as part of the land as opposed to floating on top of them. The 3D aspect of it looks really seamless and well executed.

*sidenote* I hope your feeling better ^^;

Ah, I didn't mean to prod. I hope no offense was taken, and I hope that your injury gets better.

Onto the map! I agree with Kieara, it blends together much nicer now. I'm really loving the texturing you've done on this thing. It's very well done. And that little bridge from Stevell to the Academy is cute. n.n Great job!

@ Kieara - Thanks, making the mountains seamless was the hardest challenge in what is effectively pseudo 3D. I think this is the best I can do with it now.

@ Makio - Lol, I don't take offense to anything, especially someone showing enthusiasm to see my work! :thumb: The weird thing is, usually the texturing on stuff like this can't be fully appreciated until you see it on a good monitor, which I don't have... so I still need to see it on someone else's screen!

Off topic: It wasn't too bad at all, just a swollen right hip. I've broken my tibia, fibula and femur before all in my right leg playing soccer, so I was thinking "I've completed the set", but I hadn't! XD

A tutorial would be great :)
However, great work. Little issues have been fixed since the version in the first post, so...great work. Nothing else. :thumb:
