Wondering.

I know this is really stupid of me to ask but I've been concerned about my RAM recently. After installing a few programs I see big requirements like 300MB of RAM required, or 126MB required. And I've been wondering. How do you check how much computer RAM you have? And can more RAM be installed should it be running low?

for fully detailed specs on your system, Goto Start>Run and type dxdiag in the dialog box that comes up when you click run. Then a notice about your WHQL will come up, click yes and then it will display your full system specs.

There is also another method of increasing your system's accessible memory:
1. Right click on my computer and goto properties
2. Click the advanced tab then click the settings button under performance
3. Then click the advanced tab in the most recently popped up dialogue box
4. Click the change button under Virtual memory (otherwise known as page file)
5. Click the custom size tick box and enter you minimum as 1024 and your maximum as 2048
6. Press set, click ok and then close all the dialogue boxes, from there I would suggest you to reboot your PC
7. Finished! Now your PC should run that somewhat faster.

Also to improve your ram you can:
1. Right Click--- go to Properties, Settings, And in the color quality pick 16 bits rather than 32.

2. Start menu, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Adjust Visual Effects, You can uncheck everything except the last one. that way your computer still having a nice look.

3. Start menu, My Computer, Right Click on C (Assuming that's the partition you are using), Go to Properties, Uncheck the "Allow Indexing Service..." Click Apply, if there's a warning pop up, continue, don't worry.

Those are a few tweaks that may improve your speed.

they'll improve speed but it'll also decrease visual performance in a whole, not recommended really

They'll merely decrease the "fancy menus" lol you can always switch back to 32 bits whenever you need to work with graphics.
But they'll improve the speed of your computer. maybe you should try it first before *winks*
Also concerning the changes you said about the virtual memory. Hmm
I would prefer in case you have:
256MB RAM I would set it to 512 for Min and Max
512MB RAM or higher I would rather set it to 384 for min and max
Unless you want an unstable pc of course.
Also you could go for some registry tweaks but that's a bit more advanced and can be quite tricky.
like per exemple you could add a new Dword In
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\priorityControl
then you enter IRQ8priority as a new Dword, this should improve the overall system performance by increasing the IRQ(Interrupt request line) priority of the CMOS real-time clock.
Well, of course you could always say this isn't recommended if you don't try it isn't it? *winks*
