UPDATE: 3-20-07
Here's the Newest version I've made of this character:

For retrospect, the version I had before the current one.

OLD STUFF:

So as I take a small break from working on Mei-Mei (the panda in the other thread..) I've decided to show this sprite I made. This by far had taken me the longest to sprite (and it's only one pose so far geezus..) It's for my friend's project (which he refuses to post here until he has a demo ready)

Edit: There are still a lot of things missing... I'm still trying to figure out a way to add the belt thingy without making the sprite itself look too cluttered..

Hey that drawing is very nice. Did you or your friend do that?

As far as the sprite goes... one thing to remember is sprites are small so you have to simplify or just suggest. Going too crazy with detail like you said will clutter the spirte. What I do when designing the character themselves is to try and keep it as simple as possible and if I can add more detail to the sprite I go back and change the design of the orginal character. Just makes it easier since a sprite is harder to work with than a drawing in which a drawing has limitless possiblities for detail. So try just suggesting or abreviating if you know what I mean.

Maybe add it in just ever so little (like one pixle wide) and see how that looks. If you think it looks too cluttered take it out. You don't have to go too crazy with getting EVERYTHING. I don't think the player will be like "arg I'm not playing this game since he doesn't have that extra belt on him" it's more of a matter of personal satisfaction of the creator IMO.

Hmm though what you might want to work on is the feet. Those boots seem a little strange where the ankle meets the foot. Ya know the smoothness of going from the straight part into the round part. Seems a little weird. Like it's been flattened or squished. I've noticed you've had problems there before too. Try looking at some ankle drawings or how to draw refreances for that area since you seem a little fuzzy there.

Everything else seems fine to me. Hope that helps ya.

Naw my friend drew that (my style resembles DMZ/Inuyasha a whole lot more, whereas she is pure anime)

Awesome pointers there Raven! I might not even add the belt.. I dunno' it doesn't seem too necessary to complete the sprite. I'm glad you've found some things I can work on, it helps me improve a whole lot... I'll try to look at more different angles and see what you mean. Thanks again!

Welp, here I am again, I'm deciding that I'd like to revive all my past WIPs and I came across this one... the story behind this character set named "Leivan" is an interesting one. This character was actually one of the protagonists for my friend's project that we never really got too far in. For the sake of actually finishing the sprite, I decided to revive this one as well and I think the newer design looks a lot better. Again any comments/critique/ help are welcome! Oh yeah, the parts of the characterset that are not outlined are obviously still being worked on...

Also I am planning to revive the armored version of this character as seen in the first post, but I'd like to finish this one first....

The new one is much better. The old one kind of hurts my eyes with the colors. Also the new one has a smoother look than the perfectly symetrical old one. The hair is my favorite part and the creases in the clothing I think really make it look real. ;)

The newer version is a vat improvement over the first, IMHO. What can I say, I love your style J.D.!

Thanks! I really appreciate that. It's fulfilling to see that my spriting is finally getting somewhat better! I really hope to eventually have a full game with all my sprites "cel-shaded" like this one!

Yeah lol, I also noticed that some of my older sprites are ... well simply put, pretty ugly and clashing. The one thing I really am proud of is the new hair I'm able to sprite, I'm glad you liked it!

On the sprites too.... Hair casts a shadow man... *sigh* Either you just dont pay attention, or the laws of physics ciese to exist on foreheads where you live..... that wouldnt be physics, would it? Thats not how you spell ciese, is it?
