Windows Movie Maker Crashing and a slight Sound problem

Whenever I start Windows Movie Maker, it immediately locks up and a message comes up, saying:

Windows Movie Maker.exe has encountered a problem, and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Wadafux? It does this no matter what I do, reinstalling WMM, restarting my computer, etc. and It's really pissing me off, as that's the easiest free editing software I know of. If anyone could help, that would be greatly appreciated.

Also, whenever I record a sound with Stereo Mix into audacity, it comes out way too loud. Help?

It could be related to your system itself. Have you tried the app on a fresh install of the OS?
With Audacity, you could try to edit the waves to a lower volume.

For the first problem, you may have a problem with your codecs or your directx install. Try removing any 3rd party codecs you have installed, and see if it works then. If that doesn't help, run system file checker (from command prompt, sfc /scannow) which should check your directx files for integrity and repair them if they're damaged (it'll also be checking all your other system files so be patient with it). The directx diagnostic tool (from run dialog, dxdiag) also checks your directx files iirc so you could try that first.

For audacity, is the output file that you save too loud or does it just play back too loud in audacity? If the former, I think the option you are looking for should be called Replay Gain. If it's just playing loudly in Audacity you probably just need to adjust the volume heh heh :)

No problems were found with my DirectX. I also changed my unused IE7 to unused IE6, which worked yesterday, but I recently downloaded DIVX codec, which WILL NOT REMOVE =(. I've tried removing it about 50 times, the thing won't go away.

However, the audacity problem was fixed rather easily. I didn't touch any settings or anything at all, it just records at a reasonable volume now XD.

tbh windows movie maker crashes randomly for just about everybody as its a buggy piece of crap. yourr better off just finding an alternative. :\

Your divx codec may be causing your issue then. If the uninstaller isn't working, you may need to manually uninstall its files, and it's hard to say which ones those are; I suggest looking up the specific codec you downloaded and see if you can find some manual removal instructions. One thing you can try is opening device manager and going down to sound, video, and game controllers, and checking the audio and video codec entries. Under the properties tab you can attempt to manually remove the listed codecs from there. I can't guarantee that will work though. :)

Or go mac... iMovie and iMovieHD are both ten-times better then WMM.

But I currently use Showbiz, I couldn't stand WMM. For windows I'm not that there are many, if at all, good free movie makers.

Other then that I don't know what to tell ya

We would all love to drop our PCs and go to Mac every time the PC has a problem, then back again when the Mac has a problem :P That's really a non-solution though, since most of us aren't rich.

Whenever I try to delete them, nothing happens. it will delete from the list, but then when I go back to the codec list, it re-appears.

This sounds like viral behavior, you may have some malware posing as a codec. This is common if you download random codecs off the net (for instance MYSPACE is a a den of malware codecs). Try grabbing Ad-Aware and see if it picks it up. Make sure your definitions are up to date on your antivirus and run a full scan there too, but AdAware is pretty good about killing fake codecs. If that fails, grab Hijack This!, do a scan, save a log and post it here and I'll see if I can find anything untoward. Don't go telling it to remove things though unless you're 100% sure you know what it is, you can seriously jack your computer up if you don't know what you're doing.
