Why does the imported graphics for battles have white background?

First, sorry for the long title. But I think it explained much of what I am asking for.

I imported a battler graphic in RMXP, but when I try to test play the graphic of the battler, it looks good, with just 1 big problem, it has a squarely white background around it. Why is that? How can I import graphics that doesn't shows that? :S

If you've got something like photoshop, edit out the white stuff, so it shows those grey & white squares, they mean that there's gonna be no background when you import to rpg maker.

You have to select the transparent colour. When you import the image a window comes up showing your image and you have to left click on the colour you want to be transparent.
Thank you so much  Xilef! I found out now, finally I can use this thing too :)
Very happy xD!

No, at the moment I use GraphicsGale, but mostly just because of the incredible nice zoom system, anyway. It's fine too. But at least I know that (<-- bolded text), if I ever get Photoshop. :)
