What was it?

Several months ago (late may-early june) I had a bit of comp. problem. Pretty much, EVERYTHING on the desktop was gone (and i mean everything: icons, taskbar, etc) except the desktop background. I was still able to access the taskmanager...but ya.

I reformatted my comp. and its worked fine, but i'm still curious....anyone have any idea what the heck that was?

It sounds like your explorer.exe crashed on you. :) This really isn't uncommon for any Windows OS. Pretty much either you were overhauling your memory, or your CPU was spiking causing the explorer.exe to pull an automatic kill switch.

At least that's the cause whenever I have this type of issue. But why did you reformat for? A simple restart would of fixed the problem :-/

Because I had restarted it. Repeatedly. >_< I also ran a cmd>chkdsk. Basically "errors found" and "unable to repair" were what came up I think.

And ya, I figured it was a prob. with the explorer browser. But I don't think it was an overhaul of the mem/cpu. If it was, a restart probably would have fixed it, like you said.

explorer.exe and the internet explorer application are too different things mate :). The explorer.exe is pretty much what your desktop runs off of. But who knows...very strange indeed.

>_< I said explorer browser...didn't I. *kicks self* I meant the windows browser...or desktop browser....or...whatever it was...>_< *kicks bad memory*

And ya. Its a bit weird and somethin' thats been buggin' me for a bit. I will be *very* annoyed if this was something that infect the motherboard and reoccurs.

Looks like it may have been:

-A virus

-The desktop folder and/or configuration files were corrupted somehow

-Your harddrive was corrupted in general

Instead of restarting, you chould have got the taskmanager and do file=>Run c: That will reboot explorer.exe.
I have to do that everytime my computer has been on for 5+ days.
