Is it wrong? Illegal? Or do you think they do it for entertainment, Just for laughs. Explain your thought of mind.

EDIT: Like anything that you can notice in a game, Like changing the chara (Ex. Mario in a Sonic 1)

Elaborate on what you mean by 'hacking' the games. Do you mean like going into the code and changing it to be silly? Like the Super Metroid mod that makes Samus into a bikini clad woman with a silly looking ray gun?

EDIT: oh also, this is video games, so I'm moving it. Wee

Even though I'm not sure what exactly you're asking (like Andy pointed out), I voted No because it was funny.

Truthfully, I don't find modding for personal use wrong (For instance, I'm modding the levels of Super Mario World right with Lunar Magic now as a joke for my friend Zach; think Super Mario Frustration... although not quite that annoying)

It's not wrong, I mean if you're hacking it you're most likely gonna do something to make it better (funnier, in depth, etc.) and besides, don't you like making mario levels that WILL play on your SNES?

Well It's only illegal 'til you get caught...erm..I mean...It's only illegal if you dont have the game for your S/NES. And I found a patch for Super Mario Bros 3 and he made a sequal to the game and added power-ups and new levels. I cant figure out how to patch it onto the game though...

Forgot to mention that in my post, it's not wrong with emulators and whatnot as long as you have the SNES and games. Personally, I have an SNES and a few games (Including Super Mario World), but the thing is old, so it dosen't always work right... :/ so I use the emulator instead.

Oh, and just curious, is it legal for me to use a Chrono Trigger ROM? I don't have the SNES game, but I have Final Fantasy Chronicles (Which includes Chrono Trigger). They're both the same game, so I figured it wouldn't matter, but I prefer using the emulator because the Chronicles version takes entirely too long to load in between... everything.

Okay, what if you own the game for, say, the Sega Genesis. You get a ROM for it on the computer SOLELY to play it with cheat codes. Is that wrong?

P.S. Where do I get cheats for ROMS?

ffs people just hack your games! No-one's ever complained about it and they never will, I mean you're not trying to sell them off as your own creation are you?

Not really. But game companies make games to make money. When you hack games to play them for free, they lose money. If everyone hacked games, game companies would go bankrupt.

*Sigh* It is illigal to own emulators and roms, regardless if you have the original... cept for the NES, cause it's lincense or whatever expired. But at this point in time, who cares?

Wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wait. You're saying that by hacking a game that's fifteen years old will actually physically sap the money from a game company?

I hate it when people say this. The company doesn't lose money. They simply don't gain any, and chances are, they wouldn't have anyway.

AFAIK, the ROM is only legal if you own the original game and the ROM was extracted from that game. So, if you own Chrono Trigger, you're allowed to extract a ROM from it yourself, but you're still not allowed to download a Chrono Trigger ROM. Further, the ROM is then tied to the cartridge/disc it was extracted from, meaning if you sell your game you have to get rid of the ROM as well. From a legal perspective that is.
