Valentines Day

Well this isn't just about Valentines Day, this is about most holidays in general.

I believe that the basis of Valentines Day and Christmas are really nice. The Flower and hearts and such, saying you love someone. And the holiday spirit and giving presents to one another.

However, I think that all these holidays have become too commercialised and they've gone over the top.

What are your views?

I guess at the end of the day, holidays like these are usually how you percieve them, if you're looking at it as if you got to buy this buy that, then it doesn't mean anything, but if you do it out of your heart, out of the feelings you have for another person, then it's no longer about commercial bullshit and is about the actual point of the holiday, to give out of kindness. I don't know, some humans are just too idle minded and materialistic to comprehend what days like these are about.

I agree. I hate this modern perception where we're supposed to hate on Xmas and Vday because the 'true spirit' is gone and all that.
First let me attack you Xmas haters.
BIG NEWS! Christmas is based on the Roman holiday SATURNALIA set for December 17th, but moved when the civ adopted Christianity. They gave gifts, decorated, were more cheerful, and usually celebrated the holiday season for ALL of December. Sound familiar?
Which means- the true spirit of Xmas is not about baby jesus, it's about being a good freakin person and enjoying the holidays.
K, now that that rant is done...
Vday is also based on a Roman holiday, although the name currently escapes me. It was common for lovers to spend the day together. They probably gave gifts.

I'm okay with Vday, so long as people don't go overboard. Get the girl chocolates and flowers, you know she'll enjoy them. And ladies, if you really want to do something nice for your guy on Vday, cook him a good freakin meal. Yum. :D

i basically agree... can't wait to see my girlfriend haha... i really don't like it when i get presents and stuff for like Easter.. i mean whats the point.. who cares about a stupid bunny that poops candy eggs.. its about more than that.. lol

'What's with all the nonSymposium topics being posted in Symposium? '
^ Sorry lol I'm useless :D

Yeah not having a date made this Valentine crap for me...

I just don't care. Fucking Kawanza is commercialized, so it's not like Valentine's Day should earn any specific contempt in anyone's eyes. I don't really celebrate it (Hell, I didn't even realize it was today until about an hour ago when I loaded up Firefox), but I don't have a big hate-on like others (not just here -- I mean in general) seem to.

Awesome Bro

I agree with it being commercialised way too much. It seems I hear more of my mates complain in the pub about their girlfriend's expecting a lot to be spent on them otherwise what's the point kinda deal. This obviously isn't right as the entire meaning of each holiday has become about the size of a person's pay cheque as appose to showing someone you care and listen.

On a side note i spent the entire day with Rebecca today were we:

-Went shopping for cake mix ( never ended up making a cake )
-Watched the sunset at the highest point in my town whilst exchanging gifts. Small gifts.
-Had something to eat at mine.
-Went watching Dirty dancing at the cinema ( It was a re-run for the occassion. Still paid full price  )
-Ate chinese food on a church car park haha.

I mean yeah, Today cost ... but It was only because it ended up that way. I wouldn't mind just lazing about with her all day doing jack all.

Commercializing Valentines Day and Christmas kinda cheapens the meaning of them for me. So its kinda rediculous when people get upset that there are Christmas Trees or Christmas songs at a building, when only the later has anything to remotely do with Christianity...

I think Valentine's Day is a good day for a new couple to get a bit closer to each other, but otherwise it's pretty much a marketing ploy to make you buy more stuff imo.

But hey, if I keep getting sweethearts, ring pops, and teddy bears for free, it's fine with me. ^_^

Happy Valentine's Day!

To be honest, it might be commercial bullshit these days but you've just gotta look past that, I mean me and Rachel had an amazing day yesterday, I took her out all over the place, we went to the cinema, cuddling in the park, exchanged gifts (nothing too big), gave her a really big surprise by giving her roses in the restaurant we went to and produced a ring out of my pocket (I was eventually gonna do it, but because I didn't over christmas I did it yesterday), but at the end of the day, it isn't about spoiling them rotten or being as stingy as possible, it's about showing them you really do care in your own way. The whole point of the day is to prove you really care, and that you have feelings for them. But that's just me.

I don't see how a day forcing you to take some sort of action proves that you have feelings for someone.

All me and my girlfriend did was make a meal (well I did), then watch the Brit Awards... It's fun for new couples the first time round but when you get past a few years it soon gets old. If your girlfriend is understanding you can easily agreen jsut to ignore the day anyway, a nice gesture out of the blue will always mean more, because YOU thought about it.

I liked V-day, it was an excuse to give my roomates homo-erotic cards to question their masculinity and further promote myself as the alpha-male in this apartment through fear.

And to give my ex a card that read "Pirate cat is watching you masturbate!"

And a way to get cheap bags of candy at CVS.

I hung out with a friend, we went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant (turned out it was couples night... awkward)
Smiled out loud ^_^

It is not actually possible to commercialise Valentine's day, it started off as commercial. There never was any deep meaning or intent behind it. It always was this cynical.
