Using RPG Maker XP graphics in another engine

Hey there!

For quite a long time I've been wondering if I am allowed to use the RMXP graphics once I bought the software. I'm planning to make a RPG in another engine, and it would be a great help if I can use (customized) RPG Maker graphics for that project.

I can only find answers with regard to the RPG Maker VX RTP, so I figured I would ask here.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm, interesting. I wonder how much you should change the graphics. By example, is a simple recolor enough?

Perhaps I should contact Enterbrain about this, since it's not really clear whether this is allowed. Some say the RMXP RTP is owned by the end user and not Enterbrain or RPG Maker. There might be a difference between the RTP license of XP and VX (Ace)?

The thing is, you can recolour stuff as much as you want but it's still the original artwork you're using, you'd have to edit it until it's no longer recognisable, and by that point you might as well have created your own

This is all a matter of technicality anyway. To the best of my knowledge, Enterbrain has never bothered trying to enforce that part of the license. I've seen more than a few games in places like Steam's Greenlight and XBLA that used RM* graphics and were NOT made in RPG Maker. That said, it's a matter of treading carefully, because there's nothing stopping them from deciding that they suddenly want to enforce their claims on the sprites.

As Xilef said the standard license when you buy the game does not include that right.
Whether you can get Enterbrain or some other agent/party with authority from Enterbrain to work out a different license I don't know.

Degica (the people who run the English translation for Enterbrain) said they will never allow it. I offered to pay quite a bit for it, and they still said no. They want to protect it or something.
