Urban London

A few friends of mine have been discussing about developing a game together about a close friend's life. I just wanted to get some feedback about it, to see if it was worth telling the story of my friend. His life has been incredibly difficult and it's turned him into a very hard to understand person, but I think his story needs to be told. He's been talking with me about making a book about it but I think a game would be quite an interesting spin of it.

The game will be about a young Nigerian boy and his life from a child to an adolescent. It follows him in his urban route from living in urban London to making it as a sucessful student. It shows what school life is like in incredibly rough areas, being bullied to becoming the bully, to relationships with girlfriends, love, sex, friends dying, guns and explosives, money, drugs, hospitalisation, meeting his Father in Nigeria to find out the real story of his upbringing, looking after your siblings and your Mother, police, bank robberies, student life in College and University, alcohol, graffiti, muggings and other crazy happenings.

Might be a bit difficult to divulge, and especially to create a game from it whilst telling his story. So the general jist will be a one-player game, a heck of a lot of cut-scenes, missions to complete, custom graphics (Not many urban London tilesets out there, especially not character sprites..) and various custom scripts.

If anyone from the UK, or even if you're interested in urban London then please comment here in what you'd like to see or even feel free to PM me if you wish to help! Later this week I'll be sitting down with him to get a full report on what has happened in his life so I can get a timeline for you all to read through. Also, I think this game would be better off with me releasing it in episodes and not a full-whack of a game.

What do you think?

Sorry I'm not from UK nor am I familiar with urban London, but whenever I hear London, for some reason I think about steampunk. Probably because I'm crazy about American Mcgee's Alice along with its sequel Madness Return, both having steampunk influence and are set physically in London (the real world anyway, not Wonderland).

But ya, I definitely reckon your friend's story is worthy to be told in the form of a game, perhaps more like an interactive adventure like Yume Nikki where one doesn't play to earn scores, but to experience and indulge into an environment, just like reading a book. I personally recommend wrapping your friend's story in something imaginative, rather than telling the story realistically and literally, otherwise it'd feel like a documentary to me and it can become boring even if the story is real.
