There still hasn't been a thread about this movie yet and I think there ought to be considering it's coming out on Friday!
In case you're living in a cave or something and don't know what this is about, I'll conveniently copy and paste the synopsis from Wikipedia for you. Carl Fredricksen is a retired 78-year-old balloon seller. When Carl was a child, he met and eventually married a girl named Ellie who grew up in a small midwestern town. Ellie always dreamed of visiting South America, but they grew old together, and she died before she got a chance. Now, when developers threaten to move him into an assisted living home, Carl decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie. To accomplish this, he uses 10,000 balloons to make the house fly—but unwittingly takes a chubby eight-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell with him. The two opposites match up for thrilling adventures as they encounter wild terrain, unexpected foes, and all the terrifying creatures that wait in the Venezuelan jungle.
I'm really excited for this movie. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France recently and got very good reviews. (in fact, out of 25 reviews on rottentomatoes.com so far all of them are positive) The fact that they let an animated film start the festival (which traditionally starts with a French film) is pretty cool.
I'm a little worried for the film since it's a little different than Pixar's other flicks. It's the only other Pixar film besides The Incredibles to be rated PG. It's also the first Pixar film to have human protagonists, rare creatures in the animated world. (although The Incredibles were close besides the fact that they were superheroes) It might struggle at the box office which is my worry. The film was hugely expensive (I think it was $175 million or something?) and Disney really needs a hit right now because of lackluster profits recently. You can't really deny that having a 78 year old as the main character isn't appealing to most children. But I'm really looking forward to seeing what they'll do with his character. I hope this proves to people that not all action movie heroes have to be good looking young adults! (and for once the kids aren't smarter than the adults!)
So yeah, this film looks absolutely fantastic. I've seen a lot of marketing for it as a comedy film, which is a smart move although I heard it's actually rather sad. It's also supposed to be once of Pixar's most complicated films, which should be really cool to see.
There's just so much I could say about this film and I haven't even seen it yet. I'm hoping to go see it this weekend. Anyone else planning on seeing it?
